Abstract

To easily be able to control the weight gain of cattle in beef production, mainly during the last period before slaughter, it is important to know how fast it is possible to change the feeding intensity, mainly by increasing the concentrate proportion. Several experiments have shown that it is possible to adapt cattle to a concentrate-based ration by increasing the concentrate proportion during a restricted period of time. However there is a risk that the animals get some health problems, mainly sub-clinical, if the change occurs too fast or if the feed contains a lot of easily degradable starch. Health problems that can arise are acidosis, bloat, laminitis, liver abscesses and abomasal displacement. To minimize the problems with subclinical acidosis a total mixed ration fed ad libitum, alternatively feeding at least twice a day with few daily variations in the amount of feed, is recommended. The adaption period should be at least two to three weeks. The daily increment of concentrate should not be larger than 60 gram per 100 kg live weight but is dependant on the source of the starch and the structure of the feed.
