Abstract

The rate of decomposition of organic matter in different decomposition stages can be altered due to warmer climate. Today there is a dissension about how the decomposition rates of organic matter will react to changing temperatures, research reports point in different directions. To be able to predict future scenarios it is important to gain knowledge about how organic matter will be affected. If the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases and the global mean temperature rises, the decomposition rates of organic matter can increase. This could lead to a positive feedback loop where more carbon dioxide is released from the soil to the atmosphere.

To investigate what effects different carbon polymers have on the temperature response and the significance of the physiologic status in the microbial communities, humus from a boreal spruce forest was incubated at 4, 9, 14 and 19oC and several different glucose based biopolymers were added. The metabolic stages of the microorganisms that were studied was basal respiration (BS), substrate induced respiration (SIR) and exponential growth (μ). A respirometer was used during the experiment to measure the amount of carbon dioxide leaving the soil samples. An exponential relation between BS, the temperature and the amount of carbon dioxide released from the soils were shown. For SIR all the studied substrates, except cellulose, showed exponential relations between temperature and the amount of carbon dioxide leaving the soil samples. The Q10-values of all the substrates studied were higher than Q10 of BS. The Q10-values of μ showed a significant difference (p > 0,05) between the different substrates. All substrates that reached μ all had higher Q10-values for μ than Q10 of BS

The Q10-values that were calculated varied between 2,22 and 4,69 which is within the values that have been calculated for Q10 in many other experiments where soil have been incubated and pure substrates been added. According to the hypothesis the temperature response of heterotrophic processes should decrease with increasing substrate quality. When the results are compared to the hypothesis that recalcitrant substrates should show higher Q10-values there were some contradicting results. Amylose has a higher Q10-value than amylopectin and this would support the theory of higher Q10-values in low quality substrates. However chitin and mannitol which are the substrates with the lowest quality also has the lowest Q10-values. The second hypothesis was that the temperature response of the different microbial stages SIR and μ should be significantly different. It was not possible to draw any general conclusions since only half of the results showed significant difference between Q10 of SIR and μ. More studies within this research area are necessary in order to determine how decomposition of organic matter will react to a warmer climate. The influence of microbial physiologic status on the temperature response also needs further investigation.
