Abstract
As traffic volumes increase, the demand for parking capacity grows, and requirements for safety and recovery become more prominent, rest areas play an increasingly important role
within the transport infrastructure. This project investigates how landscape architectural design can contribute to the development of an existing rest area, enabling technical and logistical requirements to coexist with human needs for safety, legibility, and restoration. The study focuses on the Sjöboda Rest Area located along the E4 highway in the Municipality of Markaryd, Sweden.
Through site visits, reference studies, literature reviews, interviews, user reviews, and analyses of traffic flows, topography, and landscape conditions, the challenges, shortcomings, and qualities of the site were identified. Particular emphasis was placed on issues related to safety, security, restoration, legibility, maintenance, and capacity. Theories concerning perceived safety and restorative environments informed the design process, while the guidelines of the Swedish Transport Administration
(Trafikverket) and the technical requirements of the
rest area served as important points of departure.
The design proposal focuses on clarifying the site’s
spatial structure, creating a clearer separation between different modes of traffic, and providing enhanced opportunities for rest, movement, and connection with nature. The location of Sjöboda alongside the Lagan river and its existing vegetation are preserved and strengthened as key qualities, while different parts of the rest area are assigned distinct functions and character within a coherent
design language. The proposal was developed through an iterative process in which functional, technical, and landscape-related considerations were continuously evaluated in relation to one another.
The project demonstrates that safety, security, restoration, and traffic functionality cannot be treated as separate issues. Measures intended to strengthen one quality may simultaneously affect another, meaning that design largely involves balancing competing considerations based on the
specific conditions of the site. By viewing the rest area as a designed landscape, legibility, contact with nature, and opportunities for restoration become integral aspects of its function rather than additions to the technical infrastructure.
The project consists of a design proposal for the Sjöboda Rest Area presented in A1 format, accompanied by a report describing the project’s background, theoretical framework, methodology, design process, and reflections. The work is primarily aimed at landscape architects, planners, and other
professionals involved in the development of rest areas and infrastructural environments.
