Abstract

Landscape architecture has the potential to be a practice of involvement and collective action towards goals of sustainable development and social justice. This paper explores possible paths of agency for landscape architects by conducting a case study-inspired analysis of 596 Acres, identifying the forms of agency that were exercised through their counter-mapping. 596 Acres was a non-profit organisation that used counter-mapping to support local residents in turning vacant lots into public community green spaces in New York City, USA. 596 Acres is analysed from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including critical cartography, counter-mapping, critical urban planning and agency theories. In doing so, three forms of agency could be identified: place-based leadership; expose, propose, politicise; and activist planning. By pluralising ‘agency’ to ‘forms of agency’, and illustrating them with counter-mapping practices, the elusive concept of agency becomes more concrete and thus achievable. The results also indicate that counter-mapping can be a powerful practice of agency for landscape architects. This thesis begins with an introductory chapter that reflects on the writing process.
