Abstract

Climate change and increasing urban densification are creating a growing need to manage cloudbursts within limited urban areas. At the same time, urban green spaces are expected to contribute ecological and social functions. This creates a need for multifunctional solutions in which several functions are coordinated within the same environment.

This thesis investigates, through design, how the planned cloudburst park in Råsta-Örvallen in Sundbyberg can be designed to coordinate the site’s hydrological, ecological and social needs, as well as how these needs are affected by shared spatial design decisions. At the municipality’s request, the design area also includes two adjacent local streets in order to relate the park to the planned development and the surrounding structure.

Research by Design was used as the overall method, with design functioning as an investigative tool in an iterative process. The work included desk studies, a site visit and studies of reference projects, as well as sketching, sections and digital modelling. The design proposals were continuously tested and revised based on the site’s conditions and identified needs.

The work shows that the possibility of creating multifunctionality is strongly dependent on the specific conditions of the site. For the cloudburst park in Råsta-Örvallen, the assumed high groundwater level limited the possibility of creating deeper depressions, which meant that larger areas had to be used for water storage. This, in turn, affected the space available for vegetation and social functions. The result therefore demonstrates that multifunctional design is not only about accommodating several functions within the same area, but also about managing the relationships and trade-offs between them. The work also shows that all functions cannot always be maximised simultaneously and that the role of the landscape architect therefore includes interpreting, prioritising and coordinating different needs based on the specific conditions of the site.
