Abstract
,In this study, 27 swab samples from corneal ulcers in horses, diagnosed with ulcerative keratitis, were collected during September and October 2024. The samples came from three equine hospitals and one small animal clinic in central Sweden. Data was also received from the Swedish Veterinary Agency from the period between October 2023 and September 2024. The goal of the study was to analyse the occurrence of bacterial species in fluorescein positive corneal ulcers in Swedish horses, and to analyse their resistance patterns to antibiotics which are frequently used in infectious ulcerative keratitis in horses in Sweden.
The results of the study showed that the most prevalent bacteria were Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. followed by Moraxella bovicula and Listeria monocytogenes. This was in accordance with other studies done throughout central and northern Europe and places with a similar climate. However, the results differed significantly from studies performed in warmer climates like in Australia. The resistance patterns show a very low prevalence of resistance to antibiotics commonly used in treatment of keratitis in horses in Sweden. In the study, Streptococcus spp. was isolated from ten samples, four of which were Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus. In total, of five isolates of Streptococcus spp. were resistant to tetracycline, including three isolates of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus. In total, Staphylococcus spp. was found in ten samples, six of which were Staphylococcus aureus. Only two of these ten showed any resistance to fusidic acid, including none of the Staphylococcus aureus isolates. No resistance to chloramphenicol was observed in any isolate. This stands in contrast to results from studies from other countries which show higher prevalence of resistance in many bacterial species, especially against first choice antibiotics in the respective country. It should be noted that the results from this study are based on a low sample size of only 34 cases of resistance testing.
The conclusion of the study is that the occurrence of bacteria species in ulcerative keratitis is roughly comparable with that in other countries. Furthermore, we can conclude that the current resistance patterns in the most found bacteria are in a better state than in many other countries, which indicates that the current policies of antibiotic use for ulcerative keratitis in horses in Sweden are relevant. In any case, further research into the topic, with larger sample sizes, is needed to confirm these results.
