Abstract
,Back and neck pain is a common problem in dogs seen in veterinary general practice and the most common cause of this is intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). A large proportion of dogs with IVDD recover without surgery and the chances of a full recovery with medical treatment alone are high. Despite back and neck pain being such a common problem in dogs today, the drug combina-tions that are used in conservative treatment of IVDD are relatively unexplored.
The aim of this study was to obtain an overview of how patients whose primary problem was assessed as back and/or neck pain, that is, suspected IVDD, are treated medically. This involved investigating which pain medications and which combinations thereof are most frequently pre-scribed, the correctness of the dosages, and whether the choice of treatment has any association with unplanned revisit consultations. To achieve this, a retrospective medical record study was conducted, where information such as clinical signs, treatments, and revisits was collected from a total of 100 dogs diagnosed with disc protrusion or disc rupture that had, at some point, visited an Evidensia clinic in Sweden during the period 1 January 2024 to 31 July 2025.
In the study, back and neck pain was identified in various breeds, with the French Bulldogg being the breed that occurred most frequently. The median age was six years. The most common treat-ment was robenacoxib in combination with gabapentin, closely followed by robenacoxib alone. Veterinarians tended to overdose NSAIDs more than any other treatment. Neuromodulators such as gabapentin and pregabalin were underdosed as often as they were dosed within the correct dosing interval. Patients who received unimodal analgesia (treatment with a single medication) had almost twice the risk of an unplanned revisit compared to those who received multimodal treatment (treatment with two or more medications; RR: 1.9, p = 0.0235). However, no statistical association was seen between the type of analgesia and whether the individuals were pain-free at the first revisit (p = 0.0832). There was also no statistically significant difference in odds between a painfree first revisit and the type of treatment (unimodal vs mulitmodal) the dogs recieved (OR: 3.6, 95% CI: 0.92–3.94).
