Abstract

Cats are one of the most common companion animals in Sweden, and the interest in cat breeding has increased considerably over recent decades. Previous research has highlighted the importance of the socialisation period and early environmental experiences for kittens’ future behaviour and welfare. The breeder therefore plays a central role in preparing kittens for life as companion cats before they move to a new home. However, there is limited research regarding which preparations breeders’ priorities and how these may contribute to the kitten’s future adaptability and wellbeing.
The aim of this study was to investigate how Swedish cat breeders prepare kittens for life as companion cats during the socialisation period. A survey was distributed to breeders to examine routines and experiences regarding handling, environmental exposure, habituation to everyday sounds, transportation, social interactions, and other preparatory measures before delivery. The study also explored breeders’ views on the importance of early socialisation and preparation for the kitten’s future life with new owners.
The results showed that breeders commonly use several different strategies to socialize kittens and expose them to everyday situations. Many breeders reported frequent handling of kittens, exposure to household sounds such as vacuum cleaners, television, and music, as well as habituation to transport cages and car rides. The findings also indicate that breeders consider early socialisation to be important for reducing stress and promoting confidence and adaptability in kittens. At the same time, variations were found in how breeders approached preparation and environmental enrichment.
The study highlights the breeder’s important role during the kitten’s early development and suggests that experiences during the socialisation period may influence the kitten’s future welfare and behaviour as a companion cat. The findings also demonstrate a need for further research regarding which specific preparatory measures have the greatest long-term effects on cats’ behavioural development and well-being.
