Abstract

Semi-natural grasslands are an important part of the Nordic agricultural history and have declined significantly in extent over the past two centuries. The lands are characterized by low nutrient levels and a high species richness. They depend on recurring grazing or mowing in order for their biodiversity to remain. Where traditional management has ceased there is the possibility of restoration so that the former values can return. By restoring these habitats, endangered species that are specialized in these lands can remain. The work of restoring seminatural grasslands, among other things, links to the EU’s Nature Restoration Regulation that came into force in 2024, where it is now law that degraded ecosystems must be restored.
The purpose of the report is to highlight the effect of restoration on management-dependent vascular plants and grassland fungi with a focus on the time passed since restoration. The study is a follow-up of the sites that have previously been restored to assess whether any of them has had a better effect of the restoration compared to the others. The data collection took place in twelve pastures in rural areas of Färgelanda municipality located in southern Dalsland. Six of the sites had been restored for a different number of years, three were continuously maintained and acted as references and three sites were not restored and used as control sites. Two inventories of management-dependent vascular plants and grassland fungi were made during the season of 2025, one in June and one in October.
The results showed that both plants and grassland fungi favoured by traditional management increased over time since restoration. The continuously maintained sites had the highest number of species, followed by the restored sites. There was also a relationship between the number of plant and fungal species, where sites with high flora values also tended to have high fungal values. The species groups seemed to prefer slightly different habitats as the areas with the most species found within each group rarely overlapped. Of the six sites that were undergoing restoration, several were estimated to be well on their way to becoming pastures with fine natural values, although a couple of sites stood out and appeared to have had a very good effect from the restoration.
Assessing whether the restoration had the desired effect on natural values is very difficult as many factors come into play and qualitative values, such as cultural values or experiences of the site, can be difficult to measure and compare. The effect of the restoration also needs to be evaluated in relation to the goals set for the restoration measures, for example that management-dependent species should increase in the restored grasslands. In addition, each site has their own conditions in terms of land, geographical location and management that make each site unique and very difficult to compare or generalize.
In order to continue evaluating restoration and address the difficulties in making comparable inventories, suggestions are given on how current methods could be complemented with other ways of looking at the sites’ values. One suggestion is to divide the restoration progress into different phases in order to be able to assess the effect of the restoration and the site’s natural values in a more equal way, in addition to the time passed since restoration. Furthermore, longer time series with frequent and regular inventories in fixed sites both before, during and after restoration would fill current knowledge gaps. Whether plants and fungi in pastures indicate the same values and how their preferences differ would also contribute to an increased understanding of how natural pasture species are interconnected.
