Abstract

Cats are at high risk of anesthesia-related side effects in modern veterinary medicine. Some of these side effects are due to the lack of important enzymes that take part in different processes that metabolizes different medication. Several studies on cats' drug distribution and metabolism highlight that cats eliminate certain medication slower than, for example, humans and dogs. In previous studies, they highlight that cats have a deficiency in several of the enzymes involved in glucuronidation, which is a large part of why they distribute anesthetics differently.

The purpose of this bachelor's thesis was to investigate side effects of different anesthetics in cats, where the work was limited to three different anesthetics: propofol, alfaxalone and ketamine. This paper compares the different anesthetics to each other to distinguish which is best to use in veterinary medicine for cats, from an animal health- and welfare perspective.

The different anesthetic drugs all had their strengths and weaknesses according to the different side effects and farmalogical proporties as well as the effect on cats' physiology and metabolism. The evidence showed that alfaxalone was the anesthetic drug that had the most optimal pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties and was therefore the best option for use in healthy cats. A contributing factor to why alfaxalone was best fitted for cats was partly because it was shown to have the least serious side effects as well as its profitable induction and stable postoperative qualities.

This paper was produced through a literature review where information about side effects from anesthetics in cats has been compiled and compared. The information was mainly taken from articles, encyclopedias and various scientific studies. Results on the three anesthetics were compared with each other to find out which anesthetic works best for cats.
