Abstract

The modern-day agriculture is dependent on inputs such as nitrogen fertilizer, whose price and production are affected by geopolitical conflicts. This means that input costs can increase while farmers are unable to affect it. If the input costs on the other hand are cheap, the overuse of these can be expected, which can have severe ecological consequences. Therefore, is it essential to have a more circular approach in the use of nitrogen. With a well-planned crop rotation with soil texture considered while adapting to weather variations, the need of external nitrogen can decrease, all while increasing the nitrogen efficiency.

In this paper the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s (Jordbruksverket) nitrogen uptake measures in wintervwheat (Triticum aestivum) fields from 2013 - 2025 will be analyzed. This, in order to facilitate the expected nitrogen uptake in winter wheat based on the preceding crop, clay- and organic matter content. Analysis of variance and graphs will be made in order to map out the effects of these factors. The preceding crops that will be analyzed are: winter canola (Brassica napus), peas (Pisum sativum), and winter wheat. The clay content will be split up in different levels, LL (low clay content of 10-20%), ML (medium clay content of 20-40%), and SL (high clay content of >40%). The organic matter contents will be split up in mf (low organic content of <2%), nmh (organic matter content of 2-3%), mmh (organic matter content of 3-6%), and mr (high organic matter content of >6%). Furthermore, the weather conditions of the years 2014 – 2025 in the areas that the measures were taken will be analyzed, and the nitrogen uptake during these years will be commented.

The results show clearly that winter canola or peas as preceding crops for winter wheat will increase the nitrogen uptake in the wheat during early stages compared to the control with winter wheat as a preceding crop. Also, ML is the most favourable clay content for nitrogen uptake in winter-wheat. Lastly, the organic matter contents did not show any significant differences in their effect on nitrogen uptake, however, the mr soils had the smallest values of uptake.

In summary, the suggested optimal nitrogen fertilizer level should be adapted to the preceding crop and clay content while growing winter wheat, all while adapting to the weather conditions.
