Abstract

Over the past decades, the service sector has become increasingly knowledge intensive, leading to more reciprocal value creation between actors. In Sweden, private forest owners own half of all productive forest land and are therefore undeniably important to the forestry sector. The private forest owners have become more heterogeneous and less directly involved in managing their forests, while retaining emotional attachments to their forest property, thereby increasing their need for management support. Combined with growing external pressures regarding forest use. Furthermore, forest owners are often constructed as consumers or timber suppliers, even though their contribution to value creation within the forestry sector is of great importance. Understanding how the choice of a forest management actor is made can therefore be understood as important. Moreover, this area remains relatively unexplored, particularly from the perspectives of both forest owners and those working with forest management. This study has therefore contributed to creating a broader and deeper understanding of how private forest owners make decisions when choosing a management actor.

The study is a case study and considered of a total of 11 semi-structured interviews with private forest owners who had different relationships with Skogssällskapet (current customers, former customers, and those who had never been customers), as well as forest managers working at Skogssällskapet. The semi-structured interviews were based on a theoretical framework consisting of descriptive decision theory, bounded rationality, trust theory and social representation theory.

The result show that private forest owners consider personal relationships, trust, inheritance and the consideration of the forest owners preferences and goals to be important factors. A strong personal relationship is created through the individual forest owner perceives trust to be built, as well as the influence of family inheritance and the social context in which they operate or by which they are surrounded. Listening to and taking the forest owners goals and preferences into account is described as central for a management actor to be considered attractive. The forest manager emphasized a similar perspective and further nuanced by highlighting the great heterogeneity among private forest owners and the importance of individually adapted management support. The study also demonstrates that forest owners may be flexible in their decision-making processes and that decisions can change even when limitations in time and information exist.

This decision-making process can be understood as one in which the individual forest owners decisions are shaped gradually by the development of trust and by the social context in which they are situated. Trust is influenced by perceptions of both competence and integrity, as well as by the social context surrounding the forest owner, which is itself shaped by norms and inherited traditions. The process is ultimately determined by the individual’s underlying decision-making criteria.
