Abstract
,Climate change is expected to increase the risk of extensive pest outbreaks in Swedish forests. Rising temperatures are predicted to improve the survival and reproductive rates of many different insect pests, while also contributing to a wider distribution range both further north in Sweden, but also higher in altitude for these insects. Global warming is also expected to weaken trees, which makes them more vulnerable to pest attacks. This combination of events could result in substantial damage to Swedish forests and the Swedish forestry sector.
After storm Gudrun, which took place during 2005, many Swedish forest owners in southern Sweden chose to plant hybrid larch (Larix x marschlinsii) due to its expected higher growth rate, shorter rotation period and better storm resistance compared to Norway spruce (Picea abies). Since then, there have been outbreaks of the larch casebearer moth (Coleophora laricella). This insect pest can cause severe defoliation on hybrid larches by eating large parts of the larches foliage. The aim of this study was to investigate if severe larch casebearer outbreaks reduce the growth of hybrid larches.
The study was conducted in an even-aged hybrid larch stand outside of Tranemo in southern Sweden, where extensive larch casebearer infestations had occurred during 2019 and 2020. Dendrochronological measurements were performed on stumps from 40 hybrid larches, that had been extensively defoliated by the larch casebearer moth. The width of the growth rings from the years between 2015 – 2024 was measured. The mean width of the growth rings from the years during the outbreak was compared with the mean width of the growth rings from the years before the outbreak and the mean width of the growth rings after the outbreak. The study was complemented with climatic data from 2015 – 2024 and a semi-structured interview with the owner of the infested forest.
The results show a significant decrease in growth ring width during the outbreak years compared to the years before and after the outbreak. Mean annual growth ring width decreased from 6,36 mm before the outbreak to 1,93 mm during the outbreak years, before increasing to 4,48 mm the years after the outbreak. The climatic data indicated that there were no obvious unfavourable climate-related circumstances during 2019 and 2020, which provides more evidence for the claim that the decrease in growth during the outbreak years was caused by defoliation of the larch casebearer moth.
The result from the interview indicates that the general opinion about hybrid larch is positive. However, the interviewed landowner emphasized that there are substantial knowledge gaps remaining regarding the risks associated with hybrid larch forests in a changing climate. This highlights the need for further research on the species and its susceptibility to future pest outbreaks.
