Abstract
,This study evaluates the possibilities of improving the energy efficiency of general and process ventilation in an ATEX-rated biochemical process industry. The aim is to reduce electricity and district heating consumption without compromising safety requirements in hazardous environments.
Three primary measures have been analyzed: reduction of air exchange rates, timecontrolled ventilation, and replacement of ventilation components. For the first measure, a reduction of the air exchange rate to 10 air changes per hour in process halls with closed chemical handling, and 20 air changes per hour in a process hall with open chemical handling, was simulated. This resulted in an annual saving of 233 MWh and approximately 193 000 SEK, corresponding to a reduction of about 12% for the affected systems. However, further investigation using LEL calculations is required to ensure acceptable risk levels in the event of a leak. An implementation of time-regulated ventilation in the process halls is calculated to yield an annual saving of 655 MWh and 548 000 SEK, corresponding to a reduction of 33 %. Regulated time control is estimated to save approximately 428 MWh and 355 000 SEK annually at half-capacity operation (a saving of nearly 20% locally for the regulated units), provided that ATEX requirements allow for temporary declassification of specific areas during unmanned hours. The final measure, involving the installation of modern fans and deeper heat recovery coils, is estimated to save approximately 980 MWh and 789 000 SEK annually. This reduces the electricity demand for the affected fans by 30% and the heating demand by nearly 38 %, representing a well-balanced compromise between heat recovery and the physical limitations of the air handling units.
