Abstract

Kronisk njursvikt hos katt är en vanligt förekommande och progressiv sjukdom. Tillståndet innebär att det sker en gradvis degenerering av njurarna och de kommer aldrig att återfå sin normala funktion igen. I dagsläget finns det ingen behandling som kan bota tillståndet utan den behandlingen som finns syftar till att hantera de symtom som uppträder, sakta ner sjukdomsprogression och förlänga livslängden. En anpassad nutrition anses vara en av de viktigaste åtgärderna för att hantera sjukdomen. Forskningen visar på tydliga, positiva hälsoeffekter av ett njurfoder på katter med kronisk njursvikt.
Genom en litteraturöversikt identifierade denna studie de näringsämnen som anses vara av extra hög relevans i ett njurfoder och deras effekt på sjukdomsprogression, njurfunktion och förebygga komplikationer. En enkät genomfördes och undersökte hur kattägarna upplevde effekterna av ett njurfoder på sin katts sjukdomsprogression och livskvalitet. De står för den långsiktiga omvårdnaden och är ofta de första att upptäcka förändringar hos sin katt. Enkäten distribuerades i olika grupper och 34 kattägare fullföljde enkäten.
Studiens resultat visade att protein och fosfor är de näringsämnen som anses vara av extra hög relevans i ett foder avsatt för katter med kronisk njursvikt. I enkäten ansåg majoriteten av kattägarna att deras katts symtom på sjukdom hade minskat i varierande grad efter insättningen av ett njurfoder. Majoriteten upplevde också att deras katt mår något bättre till mycket bättre efter bytet till ett njurfoder. Däremot upplevde inte de flesta kattägarna att deras katts livskvalitet var påverkad innan introduktionen av njurfodret, vilket resulterade i att det inte går att dra någon slutsats om njurfodrets påverkan på livskvalitet.

Chronic kidney disease is a common and progressive disease in cats. The condition results in a gradual degeneration of the kidneys and they will never regain their normal function again. As of today there is no treatment that can cure the condition, therefore the treatment that is available aims to manage symptoms that arise, slow down disease progression and prolong lifespan. Nutrition is considered to be one of the most important methods in handling the disease. Research shows significant and positive effects of a renal diet on cats with chronic kidney disease.
Through a literature review this study identified which nutrients are of high relevance in a renal diet and their effect on disease progression, renal function and preventing complications. A survey was conducted to investigate how cat owners perceive the effects of a renal diet on their cat's disease progression and quality of life. They are responsible for the long term care and are also the ones that first notice a change in their cat. The survey was distributed to different groups and 34 cat owners completed the survey.
The study results showed that protein and phosphorus are the nutrients considered to be of particularly high relevance in a diet intended for cats with chronic kidney disease. The survey study showed that the majority of the cat owners experienced that their cats symptoms of disease had somewhat decreased after the introduction of a renal diet. The majority also experienced that their cat felt somewhat better to much better after switching to a renal diet. Regarding quality of life, most cat owners in the survey did not percieve that their cat’s quality of life was affected before the introduction of a renal diet, which made it impossible to determine whether a renal diet can affect quality of life.
