Abstract

Professionell fotboll har en betydande miljöpåverkan, men formella miljöledningssystem som ISO 14001 och EMAS är fortfarande ovanliga inom sporten. Tidigare forskning visar att fotbollsklubbar möter svaga institutionella påtryckningar, vilket förklarar varför de flesta inte certifierar sig. Malmö FF avviker från detta mönster. År 2025 blev föreningen den första svenska fotbollsklubben att certifieras enligt både ISO 14001 och EMAS, trots att tydliga externa krav saknades. Studien undersöker varför Malmö FF certifierade sig frivilligt och vilka förutsättningar som gjorde det möjligt. Det är en kvalitativ enfallsstudie med abduktiv ansats, baserad på semistrukturerade intervjuer med före detta VD, före detta och nuvarande hållbarhetschef samt dokumentanalys. Det teoretiska ramverket utgörs av institutionell isomorfism och institutional work, där legitimitet länkar samman teorierna. Studien visar att certifieringen inte främst var ett resultat av påtryckningar inom fotbollsfältet, utan av arbete som bedrevs internt i föreningen. Certifieringen presenterades som ett sätt att förbättra styrning och kontroll snarare än som ett miljöprojekt. Den förankrades i vardagliga rutiner genom utbildning och kopplades till Malmö FF:s självbild som en förening med ansvar för staden. Flera förutsättningar gjorde processen möjlig, särskilt stadionägandet, det ekonomiska handlingsutrymmet, extern projektfinansiering och tillgång till europeiska nätverk. Förutsättningarna och aktörernas arbete går inte att skilja åt. Frivillig miljöcertifiering i fotboll kan ske utan starka externa krav, men kräver både personer som driver frågan och en organisation som kan genomföra den.

Professional football has a considerable environmental footprint, but formal environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 and EMAS are still rare in the sport. Earlier research suggests that football clubs face weak institutional pressure, which helps explain why most do not certify. Malmö FF stands out against this pattern. In 2025 it became the first Swedish club to certify under both ISO 14001 and EMAS, even though no clear external requirements pushed it to do so. This study asks why Malmö FF certified voluntarily and what made the process possible. It is a qualitative single-case study with an abductive approach, based on semi-structured interviews with the former CEO and the former and current head of sustainability, together with document analysis. Institutional isomorphism and institutional work form the theoretical framework, with legitimacy connecting the two. The study finds that the certification did not result from pressure within football, but from work carried out inside the club itself. Certification was presented as a way to improve management and control rather than as an environmental project, was built into everyday routines through training, and was tied to the club's identity as an organisation that takes responsibility for the city. Several conditions made this possible, in particular the club's ownership of its stadium, its financial strength, external project funding, and access to a European network. These conditions and the work done by individuals were not separate. Voluntary environmental certification in football can therefore happen without strong external pressure, but it depends on both committed individuals and an organisation able to act on what they propose.
