Abstract

Denna studie undersöker hur myskoxens närvaro uppfattas av olika aktörer i västra Härjedalen. Syftet är att analysera hur myskoxen tillskrivs mening och hur den uppfattas i ett lokalt sammanhang. Studiens metod bygger på nio kvalitativa semi-strukturerade intervjuer utspridda i Tännäs, Funäsdalen och Tänndalen, vilka analyserats genom tematisk kodning. Studiens geografiska placering motiveras genom områdets närhet till den vilda populationen av myskoxar. Studien utgår från social representationsteori och perspektiv från vetenskapsfältet human-nature relationship, inklusive natursyn, nature-society interdependence och shifting baseline syndrome. Resultaten visar ett övergripande tema av acceptans och normalisering gentemot myskoxen, med vissa skillnader i myskoxens betydelse beroende på social kontext av informanterna. Lokala entreprenörer lyfter myskoxens ekonomiska värde kopplat till naturturism och marknadsföring i linje med deras verksamheter. Informanter från samebyn beskriver att det inte finns en betydande problematik mellan myskoxpopulationen och renskötseln i området idag. Samtidigt lyfter de tidigare erfarenheter från föregående generationer kring utmaningar kopplade till myskoxen i relation till renskötseln, vilket analyseras genom shifting baseline syndrome. Analysen visar även att olika natursyner – antropocentriska, biocentriska och ekocentriska – uttrycks och relaterar till informanternas praktiska relationer till landskapet. Sammantaget visar studien att myskoxen inte enbart kan förstås som ett ekologiskt fenomen, utan även beskrivs som en social och symbolisk aktör i det lokala sammanhanget. Utifrån det insamlade materialet går det att urskilja att det inte råder en aktiv konflikt relaterad till myskoxen i området, däremot går det att urskilja en acceptans gentemot myskoxen.

This study explores how the presence of the muskox is perceived by different actors in western Härjedalen. The aim of the study is to analyze how meaning is attributed and how it is perceived within a local context. The methodology consists of nine qualitative semi-structured interviews spread out in Tännäs, Funäsdalen and Tänndalen, analyzed through thematic coding. The geographical location of the study is motivated by the area’s proximity to the wild population of muskox. The study is based on social representation theory and perspectives from the science field in human-nature relationship, including view of nature, nature-society interdependence and shifting baseline syndrome. The findings show an overall theme of acceptance and normalization towards the muskox, with some differences in meaning-making of the muskox depending on the social context of the informants. Local entrepreneurs emphasize the economic value of the muskox in relation to nature-based tourism and marketing in line with their businesses. Informants from the local sami-village describe that there are no considerable problems between the population of muskox and the reindeer husbandry in the area today but highlights past challenges from previous generations linked to reindeer husbandry, which is analyzed through shifting baseline syndrome. The analysis also reveals the presence of anthropocentric, biocentric and ecocentric perspectives linked to the informant’s practical relationships with the landscape. Overall, the muskox emerges not only as an ecological phenomenon but also as a social and symbolic actor in the local context. Based on the collected data it is possible to discern that there is no active conflict related to the muskox in the area, but rather an acceptance towards the muskox.
