Abstract

I takt med att våra städer förtätas ökar trycket på de urbana ytor mellan våra fasader och de sociala platser som innefattar “livet i staden”, där människors rörelse spelar en central roll. Arbetet syftar till att bidra till diskussionen om hur koreografiska metoder kan berika landskapsarkitekturens analys- och gestaltningsprocesser, genom att öka kunskapen om sambandet mellan kroppen och den fysiska miljön. Genom en iterativ process har ett utforskande inom landskaps- arkitektur utifrån koreografiska principer legat till grund för utvecklandet av en metod att applicera på gestaltningsprocesser, prövad på Bysistorget i Stockholm. Arbetet tar avstamp i “Four Trace Concepts in Landscape Architecture” av Christophe Girot (1999) som är en intuitiv och erfarenhetsbaserad metod inom landskapsarkitektur. Girot har utvecklat fyra begrepp som har legat till grund för utvecklandet av metoden och arbetet. Genom att spegla Giros metod mot koreografi och koreografiska principer, inspirerade av Jonathan Burrows “A Choreographer’s Handbook” (2010) tillsammans med egna erfarenheter, har metoden modifierats och utvecklats för att synliggöra kvaliteter i människors rörelser i relation till platsens rumsliga egenskaper.

Arbetet har parallellt med utvecklandet av metoden resulterat i en bok som visualiserar processen och vägen från första mötet med torget, till förslag på hur metoden skulle kunna tillämpas vid omgestaltning av torget i två faser. Detta berättat genom fotografier, ord och skisser med ett avskalat visuellt uttryck. Metoden visar att behov och funktioner utifrån rörelser kan kartläggas och fungera som ett led vidare till vad en flödesbaserad utformning skulle kunna resultera i. Metoden är utvecklad och prövad på en plats vilket leder till att arbetet inte ger en kvantitativ studie och behöver prövas på fler för att se om konceptet av koreografiska principer även går att applicera på andra gestaltningsprocesser.

Att koncentrera en gestaltningsprocess utifrån rörelse kan ge nya upptäckter och leda till ytterligare resultat som kan gynna stadens flöden. Med sociala och kulturella aspekter i fokus kan även ekologiska perspektiv gynnas vilket skapar positiva spiraler till vår stadsmiljö. Ett dynamiskt sätt att läsa och förstå rörelse, att översätta koreografi till staden.

Urban densification is affecting our cities and the pressure on the spaces between our buildings and the social spaces that embody “city life” increases, where human movement plays a central role. This project aims to contribute to the discussion on how choreographic methods can enrich the analysis and design processes of landscape architecture by increasing our understanding of the connection between the body and the physical environment. Through an iterative process, an exploration of landscape architecture based on choreographic principles has formed the foundation for the development of a method to be applied to design processes, examined at Bysistorget in Stockholm. The project is based on “Four Trace Concepts in Landscape Architecture” by Christophe Girot (1999), which is an intuitive and experience-based method within landscape architecture. Girot has developed four concepts that have formed the basis for the development of the method and the project. By applying Girot’s method to choreography and choreographic principles, inspired by Jonathan Burrows “A Choreographer’s Handbook” (2010) along with personal experiences, the method has been modified and developed to highlight qualities in people’s movements in relation to the spatial characteristics of the site.

In parallel with the development of the method, this project has resulted in a book that visualizes the process and the journey from the initial encounter with the square to proposals for how the method could be applied to the redesign of the square in two phases. This is told through photographs, text, and sketches with a minimalist visual expression. The method shows that needs and functions based on movement can be mapped and serve as a stepping stone to what a flow-based design could result in. The method was developed and examined in a single location, meaning the work does not constitute a quantitative study and needs to be examined in more settings to determine whether the concept of choreographic principles can be applied to other design processes.

Focusing a design process on movement can result in new discoveries and lead to further results that can benefit the flows of the city. By focusing on social and cultural aspects, ecological perspectives can also be benefited, creating positive spirals for our urban environment. A dynamic way of reading and understanding movement, translating choreography to the city.
