Abstract

I urbana landskap som präglas av vinterklimat förbises ofta vinterlandskapets förutsättningar i planering och gestaltning. Snö, is, kyla och mörker betraktas ofta som hinder snarare än resurser, trots att dessa aspekter i hög grad påverkar hur offentliga rum används och upplevs under stora delar av året i nordliga städer. För att skapa hållbara och användbara stadsmiljöer året om krävs ett större fokus på vinterlandskapets kvaliteter och hur dessa kan integreras i gestaltningen.

Detta examensarbete undersöker hur vinterns förutsättningar kan tas tillvara som en resurs i gestaltningen av nordliga städer. Med Luleå som fallstudie har stadens isbana på Luleälven studerats som en temporär utvidgning av stadens offentliga rum. När älven fryser förändras stadsrummet och relationen mellan land och is. Det som under delar av året upplevs som en barriär blir vintertid ett sammanhängande landskap där nya möjligheter för rörelse, vistelse och naturupplevelser uppstår.

Arbetet utgår från den nordvästra delen av isbanan i anslutning till Gültzauudden, där relationen mellan land och is analyserats genom platsbesök, fotografi, skissarbete, samtal och sensoriska studier. Analysen har inspirerats av ett inkännande och utforskande arbetssätt där rörelse, ljus, mikroklimat, siktlinjer och upplevda rumsligheter varit centrala aspekter. Observationerna visar hur vinterklimatet påverkar människors rörelsemönster och vistelse i landskapet, där behovet av rörelse, skyddade vistelseplatser och tydliga orienteringspunkter blir särskilt framträdande i det öppna islandskapet.

Utifrån analyserna identifierades ett behov av att stärka kopplingen mellan land och is samt skapa fler möjligheter att uppleva vinterlandskapet både från land och ute på isen. Gestaltningsförslaget omfattar därför nya vinteranpassade tillägg på både land och is i form av ett nytt strandstråk med spång längs vattnet, utsiktsplatser, ett vindskydd med eldstad samt temporära installationer längs isbanan. Förslaget syftar till att skapa nya rörelsemönster, vistelserum och målpunkter som stärker isbanan som ett säsongsbaserat landskapsrum och gör vinterlandskapets kvaliteter mer tillgängliga och upplevelserika.

Arbetet visar hur vinterklimatets och platsens specifika förutsättningar kan användas som en resurs för att stärka rörelse, vistelse och upplevelsen av landskapet under vinterhalvåret.

In urban environments shaped by winter climates, the conditions of the winter landscape are often overlooked in planning and design processes. Snow, ice, cold temperatures, and darkness are frequently regarded as obstacles rather than resources, despite the significant impact these factors have on how public spaces are used and experienced throughout the year in northern cities. To create sustainable and accessible urban environments year-round, greater attention is needed towards the qualities of winter landscapes and how they can be integrated into spatial design.

This thesis explores how winter conditions can be utilised as a resource in the design of northern cities. Using Luleå as a case study, the city’s ice track on the Luleå River has been examined as a temporary extension of the public urban realm. When the river freezes, the structure of the city and the relationship between land and ice are transformed. What is perceived as a barrier during ice-free periods becomes, in winter, a connected landscape that enables new opportunities for movement, recreation, and experiences of nature.

The project focuses on the northwestern section of the ice track adjacent to Gültzauudden, where the relationship between land and ice has been analysed through site visits, photography, sketching, conversations, and sensory studies. The analysis is based on an exploratory and site-sensitive design approach in which movement, light, microclimate, sightlines, and spatial experiences have been central aspects. The observations demonstrate how winter conditions influence movement patterns and the use of the landscape, where the need for movement, sheltered places for staying, and clear orientation points become particularly evident within the exposed ice landscape.

Based on the analyses, a need was identified to strengthen the connection between land and ice and to create more opportunities to experience the winter landscape both from land and out on the ice. The design proposal therefore introduces new winter-adapted interventions on both land and ice, including a new waterfront boardwalk, viewing platforms, a sheltered fireplace structure, and temporary installations along the ice track. Together, these interventions aim to create new movement patterns, places for stay, and destinations that reinforce the ice track as a seasonal landscape space while making the qualities of the winter landscape more accessible and experiential.

The project demonstrates how site-specific qualities and winter conditions can be used as a resource to strengthen movement, opportunities for stay, and the experience of the landscape during the winter season.
