Abstract

Städernas urbana klimat skapar specifika miljöförutsättningar vilka i och med klimatförändringarna tar sig än mer extrema uttryck. Stadsträden i våra urbana miljöer har en möjlighet att leverera ekosystemtjänster som kan underlätta och lösa vissa av dessa på hållbara och effektiva sätt. Äldre och större träd kan även leverera mer och fler ekosystemtjänster, därför blir det viktigt att säkerställa att träd kan nå mogen ålder. Träd i urbana miljöer idag lever tyvärr bara en bråkdel av sin potentiella livslängd, detta på grund av många olika anledningar. Om vi kan lösa problemen inte bara med staden som växtplats och anledningarna till att man tar bort träd i förtid, så kan detta bidra till en stabil grund för att möta utmaningarna på ett hållbart sätt. Att förstå hur träd kan appliceras som verktyg vid stadsplanering och på så sätt bidra till att framtidens städer fungerar mer optimalt blir avgörande. För att tillgängliggöra och konkretisera verktygen för att göra detta möjligt behöver många aspekter vävas samman.

The urban climate of our cities creates specific environmental conditions which, with climate change, takes on even more extreme expressions. Trees in our urban environments have the potential to deliver ecosystem services that can facilitate and solve some of these problems in sustainable and effective ways. Older and larger trees also have the capacity to deliver more ecosystem services than their younger counterparts, which is why it is important to ensure that trees can reach a mature age. Trees in urban environments today unfortunately only live a fraction of their potential lifespan, this is due to many different reasons. If we can solve the problems not only with the city as a complicated place to grow trees and the reasons for removing trees prematurely, this could create a stable foundation for meeting these challenges in a sustainable way. Understanding how trees can be applied as tools in urban planning and thus contribute to the cities of the future functioning more optimally is crucial. In order to make these tools accessible and concrete, many aspects need to be woven together.
