Abstract

The purpose of this report is to make an evaluation of the self-monitoring for scarification which Stora Enso is using and this study deals with the effects and importance of scarification. A comparison is made in this study with the purpose to highlight any differences between some of the leading forestry companies and significant forest organizations in Sweden. The companies represented in this report are Korsnäs, Mellanskog, SCA, Sveaskog and Södra.
In the beginning of this study an interview form was set up together with Daniel Forsberg at Stora Enso. Stora Enso is the head object of this report and seven interviews were made within that company. At the other companies only three interviews were made within each one, with an exception to Mellanskog who wished four. The interviews at Stora Enso were allocated to four districts. In each district the responsible forest manager was interviewed and two machine operators or entrepreneurs. The report covers in all 27 interviews.
During the interviews at Stora Enso I noticed that 50% of the districts where interviews were made are using a different kind of self-monitoring. The reason was that the ordinary self-monitoring was regarded too difficult for some of the drivers. In the other districts there were no problems at all with the self-monitoring. I found out that many of the interviewed are satisfied with Stora Ensos present self-monitoring. However, the form could be made easier in some ways. I came in touch with Johnny Knutsson at Falu district who have produced his own self control for scarification. After all interviews at each of the leading companies and significant forest organizations I found Johnny´s self-monitoring very good and I suggest it to Stora Enso as an example.
The other leading companies also have a working self control for scarification. The self controls were all at the same level and had the same object but were differently designed. During the interviews I noticed that the self controls were not the only problem. Most of the drivers, entrepreneurs and forestry managers asked for more time out in the field to discuss scarification and methods. I think that the drivers will perform a better work if they feel appreciation for what they do.
Another intention with this report is to analyze how many operators, entrepreneurs and forestry managers are positive to a united self control for scarification. Most drivers are working for several companies and each one of these has different self controls. The differences between the self-monitorings make the drivers uncertain and it takes more time for them to fill in the forms. If all companies would agree to a united self-monitoring for scarification the work would be easier for the drivers. All of the interviewed, at all companies, were positive for a united self-monitoring. All the companies have the same target, which is to make an as good as possible scarification.
