Abstract

Studiens re

This thesis aims to study and compare the safety-enhancing initiatives undertaken by public housing companies in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. The rese-arch focuses on the three municipal housing companies Svenska Bostäder in Stock-holm, Bostadsbolaget in Gothenburg, and MKB in Malmö. The purpose is to iden-tify strategies and measures implemented to improve perceived safety and to ana-lyze these in relation to existing research on safety and social sustainability. The methodology is inspired by multiple case study design, combining qualitative semi-structured interviews with key people within each housing company have been combined with document studies.

Previous research underscores the importance of not limiting safety-enhancing efforts to technical and physical measures alone but also emphasizes the need to promote social dimensions and trust among residents to achieve long-term socially sustainable urban development. The findings of this study support this perspective, highlighting the potential of public housing companies as societal actors capable of influencing both the physical and social environments in the areas they manage. The study reveals that these housing companies implement safety strategies that go beyond crime prevention through environmental design, initiating and maintaining long-term social processes that strengthen social cohesion and inclusion. However, the study also identifies differences in how these companies address issues such as stigmatization, with different strategies to counteract negative images of the areas.

In summary, this study concludes that enhancing safety in socioeconomically disad-vantaged areas is complex and requires a balanced approach that integrates both physical and social dimensions. The public housing companies studied appear to apply such integrated strategies, through both equal and different methods. In order to achieve long-term effects that promote socially sustainable development, both concrete physical improvements and efforts that strengthen participation, trust and social cohesion are deemed essential.
