Abstract

Estetik är en av landskapsarkitekters kärnkompetenser men det är också ett område som kan upplevas svårt att diskutera. Genom kunskaps- och estetisk teori undersöks i detta arbete landskapsarkitekters estetiska arbete i gestaltningsprojektet Stora torg i Eslöv. Syftet är att artikulera kunskapen i hur landskapsarkitekter arbetar med estetiska frågor för att bidra till en djupare förståelse för landskapsarkitekters estetiska kompetens. Detta gjordes genom att undersöka hur det estetiska arbetet utfördes under de olika faserna av projektet Stora torg i Eslöv.

För att svara på frågeställningen redogörs först för estetik, genom en bakgrund och två teoretiska utgångspunkter, för att förstå vad landskapsarkitekterna arbetar med. Sedan redogörs för landskapsarkitekternas kompetens i sig genom kunskapsteori. Med dessa två delar som teoretisk bakgrund undersöktes fallet Stora torg i Eslöv genom dokumentstudie och kvalitativa intervjuer med ansvariga landskapsarkitekter.

Resultatet presenteras som en analys av materialet där slutsatserna sammanfattningsvis handlar om att estetik förekom som (i) mål, (ii) medel och (iii) motivering genom projektet. Analysen visar att landskapsarkitekternas arbete med estetiska frågor skilde sig åt under projektets gång: Under den förberedande fasen argumenterade landskapsarkitekterna för sin estetiska kompetens. Under tävlingsfasen arbetade de med kunskap om relationen mellan icke-estetiska och estetiska egenskaper utifrån problemformuleringar som integrerade estetik med andra aspekter. Under utredningsfasen arbetade landskapsarkitekterna med att visualisera möjliga lösningar för att synliggöra tyst kunskap om estetiska egenskaper för att möjliggöra diskussion och beslut. Sist, under projekteringsfasen användes tävlingsförslaget som en gemensam plattform för att relatera detaljer till helheten för att bevara estetiska visioner.

Arbetet visar på att det estetiska arbetet var integrerat med arbetet med övriga aspekter, vilket innebär att en förståelse för landskapsarkitekternas arbete behöver ta estetik i beaktning. Dessutom visar arbetet hur landskapsarkitekterna använde estetiska medel för att skapa sociala, mellanmänskliga värden, och på så vis knyts det estetiska arbetet till främjandet av omätbara värden och en nyansering av begränsande förståelser av kunskap.

Aesthetics is one of the foundational competencies of landscape architects but it is also a topic which can be hard to discuss. Using epistemology and aesthetic theory this thesis explores how the landscape architects worked with aesthetics in the project Stora torg in Eslöv. The purpose is to articulate the knowledge in how landscape architects work with aesthetic issues to contribute to a deeper understanding of this foundational competency for landscape architects. This was done by examining how the landscape architects worked with aesthetics during the different phases of the project Stora torg in Eslöv.

To answer this question a background on aesthetics was introduced to understand what it is that the landscape architects worked with, as well as a background on epistemology in order to understand the competency in and of itself. From this theoretical foundation the case was examined through document study and qualitative interviews.

The result is presented as an analysis of the material where the conclusions in short are that aesthetics were used in the project as (i) goals, as (ii) means and as (iii) motivations. The analysis shows that the work with aesthetic issues differed during the project: During the preparatory phase the landscape architects used their aesthetic knowledge as an argument in order to be allowed to compete. During the competition phase they worked with their knowledge of the relationship between non-aesthetic and aesthetic properties, by using wicked questions which integrated aesthetic aspects with other aspects. During the investigative phase the landscape architects worked with visualizing tacit knowledge regarding aesthetic properties in order to facilitate discussions and decision. Finally, during the final phase, when building plans were produced, the competition entry was used as a common ground to relate details to the whole in order to preserve visions regarding the aesthetic.

This thesis shows how work with aesthetics was integrated with other aspects of the work, therefore an understanding of the work of landscape architects would have to take aesthetics into consideration. In addition, the thesis shows how the landscape architects used aesthetic means in order to achieve social, interpersonal values and in doing so, the work with aesthetics is tied to immeasurable values (omätbara värden) and posited as a way of nuancing the limiting understandings of knowledge.
