Abstract

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka huruvida estetik utgör en avgörande faktor för att främja hållbarhet och jämlikhet i det svenska samhället. I denna uppsats har vi granskat ArkDes, statens myndighet för arkitektur och design, eftersom de spelar en central roll i att implementera nationella strategier för hållbarhet inom den byggda miljön. Genom att systematiskt analysera ArkDes publikationer har vi använt oss av metoden Systematisk textkondensering (STC) för att identifiera och belysa centrala teman såsom medborgardialog, återbruk och integration av kulturella värden. Vår fundering utgår från frågan: Är estetik en viktig faktor för hållbarhet? För att besvara denna fråga har vi analyserat datan i relation till etablerade teoretiska perspektiv kring estetisk hållbarhet, vilket har möjliggjort en djupgående syntes av de abstrakta estetiska principerna med deras konkreta tillämpningar i designprocessen. Resultatet visar att estetikens roll inte enbart omfattar visuellt tilltalande miljöer, utan fungerar som ett integrerande verktyg som stärker medborgarnas ägandeskap, främjar social sammanhållning och bidrar till att omsätta abstrakta hållbarhetsmål i praktiken. Dessutom visar resultatet att en medveten och inkluderande dialog mellan alla aktörer är avgörande för att implementera estetiska principer och därmed skapa en miljö där både kulturella, sociala och miljömässiga dimensioner samverkar för en hållbar framtid.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether aesthetics constitutes a decisive factor in promoting sustainability and equality within Swedish society. In this essay we have examined ArkDes, the state authority for architecture and design, as they play a central role in implementing national sustainability strategies within the built environment. By systematically analyzing ArkDes publications, we have employed the method of Systematic Text Condensation (STC) to identify and highlight central themes such as citizen dialogue, reuse, and the integration of cultural values. Our inquiry is founded upon the question: Is aesthetics an important factor for sustainability? To answer this question, we have analyzed data in relation to established theoretical perspectives on aesthetic sustainability, which has enabled an in-depth synthesis of the abstract aesthetic principles with their concrete applications in the design process. The results indicate that the role of aesthetics does not merely encompass visually appealing environments, but rather functions as an integrative tool that enhances citizens’ sense of ownership, promotes social cohesion, and contributes to translating abstract sustainability goals into practice. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that a conscious and inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders is crucial for implementing aesthetic principles and thereby creating an environment in which cultural, social, and environmental dimensions interact toward a sustainable future.
