Abstract

Kan livskraften hos stadens så kallade ogräs bidra till att förgröna och återförtrolla det urbana landskapet?
Det här arbetet utforskar potentialen hos den spontana vegetationen i urbana landskap i förhållande till bland annat biologisk mångfald, ambivalenta attityder och estetiska upp-levelser. Utifrån verkliga projekt som strävat efter att tillvarata denna potential identifie-ras ett antal principer och strategier för att på olika sätt integrera spontan vegetation i gestaltade stadslandskap på sätt som gynnar biologisk mångfald och mänskliga upplevel-sevärden.
En inledande litteraturstudie konstaterar bland annat att spontan vegetation kan vara effektiv resurs för att öka den urbana biologiska mångfalden både lokalt, regionalt och globalt, med varierande bidrag beroende på växtsamhällets specifika sammansättning och successionsstadie. Här presenteras även de alternativa kvaliteter och upplevelser som vilda områden erbjuder människor i stadens annars mycket tillrättalagda och kontrolle-rade fysiska miljö. Samtidigt tycks allmänhetens attityder och känslor kring urban spon-tan natur präglas av en ambivalens av både negativa konnotationer och hjärtlig anknyt-ning.
De föreslagna principerna Inbjudande anläggningsstrukturer, Gestaltande skötsel, Förhö-jande tillägg och Relationsbyggande initiativ, utvecklas genom tre olika strategier vardera, vilka beskrivs genom verkliga exempel och diskuteras i förhållande till sina implikationer.
Den avslutande diskussionen resonerar bland annat kring vad det innebär med en es-tetiksyn som bygger på upplevelser av det oförutsägbara samt hur de identifierade strate-gierna egentligen kan användas utan att värdefulla aspekter hos helt spontana miljöer går förlorade.

Can the vitality of the so-called urban weeds contribute to greening and re-enchanting the cityscape?
This thesis explores the potential of spontaneous vegetation in urban landscapes in relation to biodiversity, ambivalent attitudes, and aesthetic experiences. Based on real-world projects that have sought to harness this potential, a set of principles and strategies is identified for integrating spontaneous vegetation into designed urban environments in ways that support both biodiversity and human experiential values.
An initial literature review highlights that spontaneous vegetation can be an effective resource for enhancing urban biodiversity at local, regional, and global scales, with vary-ing contributions depending on the composition and successional stage of the plant com-munity. The review also presents the alternative qualities and experiences that wild areas offer people in otherwise highly regulated and controlled urban environments. At the same time, public attitudes and emotions towards urban spontaneous nature appear to be shaped by ambivalence, combining both negative connotations and a deep sense of at-tachment.
The proposed principles—Inviting Structural Frameworks, Creative Maintenance, En-hancing Additions, and Relationship-Building Initiatives—are developed through three dis-tinct strategies each, illustrated by real-world examples and discussed in relation to their implications.
The concluding discussion reflects on the implications of an aesthetic perspective cen-tered on experiences of the uncontrollable and considers how the identified strategies can be implemented without losing the valuable qualities of entirely spontaneous environ-ments.
