Abstract

Tand- och munhålesjukdomar är mycket vanligt hos katt, och några av de vanligare sjukdomarna
är gingivit, parodontit, TR och stomatit. En sjukdom som drabbar katter under könsmognaden upp
till två-tre års ålder är juvenil gingivit och juvenil parodontit. Etiologin till dessa sjukdomar är inte
känd, men vissa raser anses vara predisponerade, bland annat Maine Coon, Perser, Siames, Somali
och Abessinier. Det finns dock få publicerade studier om prevalensen för dessa sjukdomar, så syftet med denna studie var att undersöka prevalensen hos vissa utvalda tandsjukdomar via djurägarrapporterad data, med fokus på juvenil gingivit och juvenil parodontit.
En enkät skickades ut till specifika kattgrupper på sociala medier där djurägare fick chansen att
svara på frågor om kattens ras och ålder, samt om deras katt blivit diagnostiserad med någon eller
några av sex olika tandsjukdomar, och i så fall vid vilken ålder katten blev diagnostiserad. Totalt
erhölls 863 svar, och efter exklusionskriterier applicerats, användes 782 svar i analysen. Katterna
delades in i tre grupper utifrån deras ras: Huskatt, Maine Coon och Övriga raser. Katter som var
diagnostiserade med gingivit från noll till tre års ålder i de tre rasgrupperna jämfördes med ett
icke-sammanvägt z-test för populationsandelar (α=0,05).
Resultatet visade att den ägarrapporterade prevalensen för juvenil gingivit var signifikant högre
hos Maine Coon och de övriga raserna jämfört med huskattgruppen (p<0,05). Det var dock ingen
signifikant skillnad mellan Maine Coon-gruppen och de övriga raserna. Prevalensen av juvenil
parodontit var signifikant högre hos de övriga raserna jämfört med Maine Coon-gruppen och huskattgruppen (p<0,05). Ytterligare studier behövs dock för att ta reda på den exakta prevalensen av
juvenil gingivit och parodontit hos Maine Coon och övriga raser.

Dental and oral diseases are very common in cats, and some more common diseases are gingivitis,
periodontitis, TR and stomatitis. One disease that affects cats during sexual maturity up to 2-3
years of age is juvenile gingivitis and juvenile periodontitis. The etiology of these diseases is not
known, but some breeds are considered to be predisposed, including Maine Coon, Persian, Siamese, Somali and Abyssinian. There are only a few published studies about the prevalence of
these diseases, and thus the aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of a few selected
dental diseases through owner reported data, with a focus on juvenile gingivitis and juvenile
periodontitis.
A survey was distributed amongst specific cat groups on social media where owners had the
opportunity to answer questions about their cat’s breed and age, as well as if their cat ever have
been diagnosed with one or several of six different dental diseases, and if so, how old the cat was
at the time of the diagnosis. A total of 863 answers were collected, and after certain exclusion
criteria were applied, 782 answers were used in the result. The cats were split into three groups
based on their breeds: Domestic cat, Maine Coon and Other breeds. Cats that were diagnosed with
gingivitis and periodontitis between zero and three years of age in the three breed groups were
compared with each other with an unpooled two sample z-test for proportions (α=0,05).
The results show that the prevalence for juvenile gingivitis was significantly higher in Maine Coon
and the other breeds compared to the Domestic cat-group (p<0,05). However, there were no significant difference between the Maine Coon-group and the other breeds. The prevalence of juvenile
periodontitis was significantly higher in the other breeds compared to Maine Coon-group and the
Domestic cat-group (p<0,05). Additional research is needed to determine the exact prevalence of
juvenile gingivitis and periodontitis in Maine Coon and other cat breeds.
