Abstract

Agroforestry, där träd och buskar integreras med jordbruksgrödor och/eller djurproduktion är en odlingsmetod för att skapa hållbara odlingssystem. Fördelarna inkluderar ökad biologisk mångfald, förbättrad jordhälsa, skydd från erosion och koldioxidbindning.
Syftet med detta arbete är att utforska och lyfta fram potentialen hos agroforestry som en hållbar jordbruksmetod i Europa. Genom att undersöka de främsta utmaningarna för implementeringen av agroforestry samt kartlägga aktuella initiativ och tänkbara lösningar, strävar arbetet efter att skapa en fördjupad insikt i hur agroforestry kan bidra till både ekologisk och ekonomisk hållbarhet inom jordbruket.
Studien baseras huvudsakligen på information från vetenskapliga artiklar men inkluderar även material från böcker och ideella organisationer.
Huvudresultaten kring utmaningar för en bredare implementering av agroforestry i Europa innefattar ekonomiska hinder, som höga initiala kostnader och fördröjd avkastning, samt byråkratiska svårigheter och kulturella attityder såsom motstånd mot nya metoder. Bristen på utbildning och information för lantbrukare försvårar ytterligare utvecklingen. För att öka agroforestrysystemets genomslagskraft behövs förbättringar i subventionssystem, fler utbildningsinsatser och rådgivning. Pågående initiativ med exempelgårdar illustrerar agroforestrys roll som en hållbar jordbruksstrategi.
Agroforestry har potential att bli en central del av Europas omställning till ett hållbart jordbruk, tack vare sina miljömässiga och produktivitetsrelaterade fördelar. För att realisera denna potential krävs dock att ekonomiska och byråkratiska hinder övervinns, samtidigt som utbildning och rådgivning till lantbrukare förstärks. Med rätt stöd och reformer kan agroforestry bidra till ett resilient och klimatvänligt jordbruk som gynnar både ekologisk och ekonomisk hållbarhet.

Agroforestry, where trees and shrubs are integrated with agricultural crops and/or livestock production, is a farming method aimed at creating sustainable agricultural systems. The benefits include increased biodiversity, improved soil health, protection against erosion, and carbon sequestration.
The purpose of this work is to explore and highlight the potential of agroforestry as a sustainable agricultural method in Europe. By examining the main challenges for implementing agroforestry and mapping current initiatives and possible solutions, this work seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how agroforestry can contribute to both ecological and economic sustainability in agriculture.
The study is primarily based on information from scientific articles but also includes material from books and non-profit organizations.
The main findings regarding challenges to the broader implementation of agroforestry in Europe include economic barriers, such as high initial costs and slow returns, as well as bureaucratic difficulties and cultural attitudes, such as resistance to new methods. The lack of education and information for farmers further complicates development. To increase the impact of agroforestry, improvements are needed in subsidy systems, more educational efforts and advisory services.
Ongoing initiatives, including example farms, illustrate agroforestry’s potential as a sustainable farming strategy.
Agroforestry has the potential to become a key part of Europe’s transition to sustainable agriculture, thanks to its environmental and productivity benefits. However, in order to realize this potential, economic and bureaucratic barriers must be overcome, while education and advisory services for farmers are strengthened. With the right support and reforms, agroforestry can contribute to resilient and climate-friendly agriculture that benefits both ecological and economic sustainability.
