Abstract

Det här är en studie av projektet Timescape Garden, en gestaltningsprocess av ett grönområde på Syltenberget i Norrköping. Projektet är en konstnärlig process och ett transdisciplinärt samarbete mellan arkitektur, stadsplanering, dans och artificiell intelligens. Den här
studien fokuserar på dansens påverkan på designprocessen och designförslaget för platsen. Frågorna som studiens ställer sig är hur den konstnärliga somatiska praktiken kan integreras i en designprocess och vad som uppstår i det mötet. Vidare frågar sig studien hur designförslaget påverkas av det mötet. Det teoretiska ramverket bygger på ekologiska perspektiv inom New Materialism och filosofi med relevans för landskapsarkitektur. Vidare är Non Representational Theory ett viktigt ramverk liksom teorier om att ”tänka genom görandet” och hur det kan avläsa, synliggöra och generera information om rum, kropp, rytm och rörelse. Till sist går studien igenom teorier om dansimprovisation, estetiska upplevelser, scores och rummets inverkan på upplevelsen. Tillvägagångssättet är konstnärlig forskning och studien använder sig av Girots
Four trace concepts som struktur för materialet.

Sammanfattningsvis har mitt självständiga arbete har lett till att jag har identifierat fyra viktiga principer för designprocessen som dansen kan bidra till och som skulle kunna användas av eller överföras till andra designprocesser. För det första att närma sig en plattare hierarki mellan mänskligt och mer-än-mänskligt liv genom hela processen. För det andra är det viktigt
att värdera förkroppsligad kunskap och intellektuell kunskap lika högt. För det tredje är tiden en viktig aspekt i designprocessen både för att sätta platsen i relation till en dåtid och framtid men också för att undersöka platsens rytmicitet som en del av ett ekologiskt perspektiv. Slutligen bör platsens rytmicitet och egna rörelser ligga till grund för designen samtidigt som det är viktigt att vara medveten om vilka rytmer som tillförs eller dras bort genom designen. Det betyder att dansen påverkar designförslaget eftersom den till stor del är utgångspunkten för placering, storlek, form och komposition av olika designelement.

This is a study about the project Timescape Garden, a design process for a green area at Syltenberget in Norrköping. The project is an artistic process and a transdisciplinary collaboration involving architecture, urban planning, dance, and artificial intelligence. This study examines how dance influences the design process and proposal for the site. The questions posed by the study concern how the artistic somatic practice can be integrated into a design process and what emerges in that encounter. Non-Representational Theory is a significant framework, along with theories emphasizing ”thinking through doing” and how it can interpret, visualize, and generate information about space, body, rhythm, and movement. Finally, the study explores theories of dance improvisation, aesthetics, scores, and the impact space has on experience. The approach is artistic research and the study adheres to Girot’s Four trace concepts as a structure for the material.

In summary, this study has led to the identification of four crucial principles for the design process that dance can contribute to and that could be applied to or transferred to other design processes. Firstly, approaching a flatter hierarchy between human and more-than-human life
throughout the entire process is essential. Secondly, it is crucial to value embodied knowledge and intellectual knowledge equally. Thirdly, time is a significant aspect in the design process, both to relate the place to a past and future and to investigate the rhythmicity of the place as
part of an ecological perspective. Finally, the rhythmicity of the place and its own movements should form the basis of the design, while also being mindful of the rhythms added or subtracted through the design. This means that dance influences the design proposal, as it largely informs the placement, size, form, and composition of the design proposals.
