Abstract

Odling med barn har visat sig ha flera positiva effekter hos barnen, som exempelvis bättre självkänsla, glädje och positiv inställning till grönsaker. Skolträdgårdsmiljö kan också bidra till högre engagemang och bättre skolresultat hos barn. Hur odling med barn kan genomföras kan se olika ut. I detta kandidatarbete beskrivs hur tre olika verksamheter arbetar med odling med barn samt intervjupersonernas upplevelser av detta. Syftet var att undersöka hur odlingsrelaterade aktiviteter genomförs på tre utvalda verksamheter, samt vilka mål verksamheterna har och vilka upplevda effekter man ser.
Studien bygger på kvalitativ metod med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Studien innefattar verksamheter som arbetar med odlingsaktiviteter för barn inom förskole- och skolverksamhet. Innehållet i intervjuerna för varje verksamhet analyserades och kategoriserades under olika teman kombinerat med en analys enligt SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats).
Resultatet beskriver de tre verksamheterna; Skolehaven Islands Brygge i Köpenhamn, Pedagogiska avdelningen på Göteborgs botaniska trädgård och barnverksamhet på Botildenborg i Malmö. Förutsättningarna för de olika verksamheterna var olika. Verksamheterna arbetade på olika sätt, bland annat på grund av hur finansieringen såg ut. Samtliga verksamheter arbetar med hållbar utveckling. Exempel på upplevda effekter var att barn kunde bli stärkta och att rädslor kunde minska. Styrkor som framkom var bland annat hög kompetens hos respondenterna, flexibilitet att utforma aktiviteterna så att de passade olika barns behov samt lärande genom praktiska moment eller genom att använda olika sinnen. En möjlighet som framkom var att sprida inspiration och kunskap. Olika aspekter av hård väderlek var exempel på hot. Resultatet i detta arbete tyder på goda möjligheter att koppla lärande för hållbar utveckling till odlingsaktiviteter.

Gardening with children has shown many positive effects. For example, better self-esteem, happiness, more knowledge about vegetables and a more positive attitude towards vegetables. The school garden environment can also contribute to a higher amount of dedication and better academic results. Gardening with children can be done in different ways. This study describes how three facilities are working with gardening with children and the interviewees’ experiences of this. The purpose was to explore how gardening activities with children is done at the facilities, what the goals with the gardening activities are at the facilities and which effects the interviewees can identify.
The study is based on qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. The study includes facilities, which is working with gardening with children within preschool and elementary school. The answers from each interview was analyzed and categorized into different themes, in combination with an analysis according to SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats).
The results describe the three facilities; School Garden Islands Brygge in Copenhagen, The pedagogical unit at Gothenburg Botanical Garden and childrens’ activities at Botildenborg in Malmö. The contexts for the facilities differed and the facilities were working in different ways, for example because of the financing. All the units were working with sustainable development. Examples of effects interviewees had seen were that children could become strengthened and that fears could diminish. Strengths that emerged were for instance high competence in the interviewees, flexibility to design the activities from the different children’s wishes and needs, and learning through practical elements or by using different senses. An opportunity was to spread inspiration and knowledge. Differents aspects of severe weather conditions were examples of threats.
Based on the results in this study the possibilities to use gardening in children’s learning for sustainable education seem good.
