Abstract

Idag finns det en mängd informationskällor där man kan få tips och råd för hur man bör uppfostra sin valp för att den ska bli en trygg vuxen hund. Många av källorna kommer från veterinärer, hundpsykologer eller hundtränare, medan det finns ett mer begränsat utbud av information direkt från hunduppfödare. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vad hunduppfödare ger för tips och råd till nyblivna hundägare samt vad de tycker är viktigast och vad man bör lägga mest vikt på. Metoden som valdes för denna studie var att använda sig av en webbaserad enkät som riktade sig till hunduppfödare med frågor som de fick svara på. Frågorna handlade om uppfödarens egna erfarenheter med hundar, vad de tycker är viktigast att tänka på och göra under uppfostran, samt i hur stor utsträckning de ger råd om olika punkter. Det fanns också med ett par frågor om de nya hundägarna. Resultaten påvisade på att de allra flesta hunduppfödare alltid gav råd eller tips till de nya valpägarna (94%). De råd som gavs i störst utsträckning var råd om socialisering (60%) samt positiv förstärkning av beteenden (62%). Resultaten påvisade också på att de flesta av hunduppfödarna som svarat på enkäten tyckte att socialisering samt tidig träning och uppfostran var viktiga faktorer för att lyckas med valpens uppväxt. Att träna på passivitet var också något som kom upp mycket bland svaren. Det som var svårast för de nya valpägarna att ta till sig var enligt resultaten träningen och socialisering av valpen, passivitetsträning samt vad de ska ge för foder. 16% svarade att alla nya valpägare hör av sig med frågor, 41% svarade att det händer i vissa fall. De frågorna som då kom upp enligt de svarande var bland annat frågor om pälsvård, veterinärvård, rumsrenhet och allmänt om uppfostran.

Today, there is a multitude of information available, including tips and advice on how to raise a puppy into a safe adult dog. A lot of this information sources from veterinarians, dog behaviorists and dog trainers, while there is a more limited supply of information coming directly from dog breeders. The aim of this study was to examine what advice breeders give to the new dog owners and what they think is most important, along with what the dog owners should focus on the most. The method chosen for this study was to reach dog breeders through a web-based survey with a questionnaire. The questions were about what the breeders thought was most important to think about and do when it comes to raising a puppy and there were also a couple of questions regarding the new dog owners. The results suggested that the vast majority of dog breeders always provided some kind of advice or tips to new puppy owners (94%). The advice given to the greatest extent included advice on socialization (60%) and positive reinforcement of behaviors (62%). The results also indicated that most of the dog breeders who responded to the survey believed that socialization, as well as early training and upbringing, were important factors for the successful upbringing of the puppy. Training on passivity was also something that came up a lot among the answers. According to the results, the most difficult things for new puppy owners to understand were training and socialization of the puppy, passivity training, and what kind of food to provide. 16% responded that all new puppy owners get in touch with questions, while 41% said that it happens in some cases. The questions that then arose, according to the respondents, included questions about coat care, veterinary care, housebreaking, and general upbringing.
