Abstract

Uppsatsens syfte är att kritisk granska och analysera nyhetsrapporteringen av rovdjursdiskursen för att urskilja hur olika maktstrukturer mellan stad och land syns och reproduceras i porträtteringen. Särskilt fokus ligger i den mediala bilden av landsbygd i vargfrågan där traditionella diskurser om landsbygd kan reproduceras snarare än utmanas i frågan. Studien tar avstamp i tidigare forsknings fokus på varg som en konfliktfylld fråga och som en debatt som ligger i skiljelinjen mellan stad och land, för att undersöka om detta bekräftas i den svenska nyhetsrapporteringen med exempel från tidningarna Dagens Nyheter samt Nya Wermlands-Tidningen. Tidningarna analyseras med hjälp av Norman Faircloughs (2001, 2009) kritiska diskursanalys med fokus på språk, diskurs och makt samt Carol Bacchis (2009) policyanalys med fokus på hur problem representeras och konstrueras. Studien använder begreppen rural gaze och centrum/periferi som teoretiska angreppsätt för att exemplifiera hur landsbygdens representationer speglas i nyhetsrapporteringen av varg. Genom analys av språkbruk och olika representationer synliggör studien att varg som fråga lyfts fram som känsligt och svårt att ta i. Relationen mellan människa och varg konstrueras som känslosam och konfliktfylld i tidningarnas framställning av frågan genom att positionera olika aktörer och värden mot varandra. Hur tidningarna refererar till varg som känsligt och svårt att lösa ramar in vargfrågan till att vara ett fördefinierat problem med föreställningar om vad som är väsentligt och inte, vilket visar på medias roll i att reproducera rovdjursdiskursen. Uppsatsen visar att det finns många olika representationer av landsbygd som syns i rovdjursdiskursen där både traditionella roller om en landsbygdsidyll och bakåtsträvande plats kan synas i den mediala bilden. Detta sker genom att lyfta vargen som politisk fråga för landsbygdsväljare, samt att positionera vargen till att vara en vattendelare mellan stad och land. Även en diskussion om relationen mellan varg och samhälle synliggör en distans mellan stad och land. Den mediala bilden av vargfrågan kan därför ses upprätthålla och reproducera diskurser om landsbygd som en plats för det förgångna, samt en plats för natur och nationalhistorisk idyll. Detta bekräftas i uppsatsen genom analys av citat från tidningarna som tyder på att medias roll i att reproducera och konstruera debatten är betydande och kan spä på diskursen om polariseringen mellan motpolerna stad och land.

The aim of the thesis is to critically examine and analyse the news reporting of the wolf discourse to identify how different power structures between urban and rural areas are seen and reproduced in the portrayal. A particular focus is on the medial portrayal of rural areas in the wolf debate, where traditional discourses about the rural can be reproduced rather than challenged. The study uses earlier research focusing on the wolf as a conflictual issue and as a debate that lies in the rural-urban divide to investigate whether this is also the case in Swedish news reporting with examples from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Nya Wermlands-Tidningen. The newspapers are analysed using Norman Fairclough's (2001, 2009) critical discourse analysis with a focus on language, discourse and power and Carol Bacchi's (2009) policy analysis with a focus on how problems are represented and constructed. The study uses the concepts of rural gaze and centre/periphery as theoretical approaches to exemplify how rural representations are reflected in the news reporting of wolves. By analysing language and representations, the study reveals that the wolf as an issue is highlighted as sensitive and difficult to handle. The relationship between humans and wolves is constructed as emotional and conflictual in the newspapers' presentation of the issue by positioning different actors and representations against each other. How the newspapers refer to the wolf debate as sensitive and difficult to solve, frames the wolf problem as a predefined problem with notions of what is substantial and what is not, which shows the media's role in reproducing the wolf discourse. The thesis shows that there are many different representations of the rural landscape that are visible in the wolf discourse, where both traditional roles of a rural idyll and place with regressive thoughts can be shown in the medial portrayal. This occurs through raising the wolf as a political issue for rural voters and positioning the wolf as a divider between the city and the rural areas. A discussion of the connection between the wolf and society also reveals a distance between the city and the rural community. The medial portrayal of the wolf issue can therefore be seen to enforce and reproduce discourses about the rural landscape as a place of the past and a place of nature and national historical idyll. The thesis then confirms that the role media has in reproducing and constructing the debate is significant, which can further reinforce the discourse on the urban-rural divide.
