Abstract

Kan konst användas som ett verktyg för att bidra till att medborgare känner större tillhörighet i sin
närmiljö, och i så fall hur? För att skapa tillhörighet i sin närmiljö bör medborgare appropriera
den. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka på vilka sätt konst har använts av konstnärer
tillsammans med medborgare för att appropriera rum, samt att se vilka positiva och negativa sidor
konst har som verktyg för att appropriera rum.

Undersökningen har gjorts genom exempelstudier av två konstprojekt som båda resulterat i att rum
approprierats. Det ena exemplet är landskapsarkitekturkollektivet Dis/Orders arbete på
Biblioteksplatsen i Rosengård, och det andra är konstprojektet Konstkiosk på st. Knuts väg,
initierad av Peter Dacke och Christel Lundberg. Exempelstudierna har utförts genom intervjuer av
projekten i frågas skapare, samt genom litteraturstudie.

Resultatet av undersökningen är ett antal metoder använda av konstnärerna för att appropriera
rum. De gemensamma metoderna var de mest intressanta, då inga av dessa är specifika för konst.
Samtliga gemensamma metoder involverade dock att vara på plats i rummet och göra något
tillsammans med deltagande medborgare. Slutsatsen blir därför att formen görandet tar inte är det
mest relevanta, utan att akten av görande, görandet i sig, är det viktigaste.

Genom undersökningen har ett flertal av konstens positiva sidor visats. Konst kan, bland annat,
framföra kritik mot befintliga samhällsförhållanden. Men det finns även negativa aspekt med
användandet av konst för att appropriera rum. Ett av dessa är fenomenet projekttrötthet, att
medborgare är trötta på tillfälliga konstprojekt initierade av stat eller kommun, och som bidrar
väldigt lite till permanenta förändringar. Något som direkt kan försämra medborgares förtroende
för politiska processer i samhället.

Can art be used as a tool for contributing to citizens feeling greater belonging within their local
environments, and in that case, how? To create a sense of belonging citizens ought to appropriate
their local environments. The purpose of this essay is to research different ways in which art has
been used by artists in participation with citizens to appropriate space, as well as defining positive
and negative aspects of art as a tool for appropriating space.

The research has been made through example studies of two art projects, both of which resulted in
the appropriation of space. The first example is the landscape architecture collective Dis/Orders
process, working at Biblioteksplatsen in Rosengård, and the other is the art project Konstkiosk on
St. Knuts road, initiated by artists Peter Dacke and Christel Lundberg. The example studies has
been made through interviews with the authors of the projects in question, as well as literature
studies.

The research resulted in a number of methods used by the artists to appropriate space. The most
interesting of which are the methods which both cases had in common, as none of these methods
are specific to art. Each of the common methods did however involve being on site, and doing
something with the participating citizens. The conclusion is therefore that the shape the doing
takes is not the most relevant, but rather that the act of doing, the doing in itself, is the most
important.

Through the research a number of positive aspects within art has come to light. Art possesses,
among others, the quality to present critique towards current social conditions. But there also
exists negative aspects within the usage of art as a tool to appropriate space. One of which is the
phenomenon project-tiredness, meaning that citizens are tired of temporary art projects initiated
by state or municipality, which contribute very little to permanent change. An issue that can affect
citizens’ trust in political processes within society in negative ways.
