Abstract

under 0,1.

Background: Agility is a fast-paced canine sport which demands a lot from its athletes where about
30% of the participating dogs are reported as having been injured at least once. Several studies have
been made to evaluate injury patterns and risk factors, but because of the complexity of the etiology
of injuries the subject is still relatively unexplored. This study aimed to elaborate on the findings of
previous studies and possibly further explore different associations between the dogs, the handlers,
their routines, and risk of injury by use of a digital questionnaire and statistical analysis.
Results: The results showed that approximately one in three dogs training/competing in agility were
injured at least once during their career, that most recovered within two months and that slightly
more than half received veterinary treatment for their injury. The following factors had a statistically
significant association with an increased odds-ratio of injury in the dogs in the study: The increasing
age of the dog meant an increased odds ratio of having been injured and a lower height at the withers
of the dog relative to the height of jumps in competition also increased the odds-ratio. In handlers,
longer experience in the sport was associated with a higher odds of injury, and dogs with handlers
that had competed in class three had an increased odds of having been injured. Several other factors
had a weak (p<0.1) association with a change in odds-ratio and are promising areas for further study.
Conclusions: The injury statistics in this study follows a pattern similar to those found in previous
studies with respondents in other countries. However, many factors that have been correlated with
high injury prevalence in previous studies have not shown any statistically significant association
with increased odds ratio of having been injured in this study. However, several other factors had a
statistically significant association with increased odds ratio for being injured in this study: two of
these were linked to characteristics of the handler, one to the dog, and one to competition routines.
One of these factors was a ratio of two other variables that showed no statistically significant
association with a change in odds ratio for having been injured by themselves. This indicates that
more risk factors may be multifactorial. In addition to this, five additional factors showed potential
for further study as the models that included these had a p-value above the significance level but
below 0.1. Further studies can thus explore these associations further. These studies should however
be done with more advanced statistical methods and, if possible, with a larger sample size.
