Abstract

Östra kyrkogården i Malmö invigdes 1921. Den är formgiven av arkitekt Sigurd Lewerentz och är ett av de främsta exemplen på begravnings- och landskapsarkitektur i Europa under 1900-talet. Det finns ett behov att utveckla dess minneslund och de närmaste omgivningarna, samt en efterfrågan på fler platser för sorg, kontemplation och rekreation i en konfessionsneutral kontext. Detta arbete har för avsikt att ge ett idéförslag, i form av en gestaltning som visar på en möjlig utveckling av området.

Idén till arbetet är hämtad från 2021 års studenttävling, utlyst av bland annat Tankesmedjan Movium vid SLU. Detta arbete utgår från delar av tävlingens syfte men har för avsikt att ta ett större grepp om det omgivande landskapet och utveckla fler konfessionsneutrala minnes- och mötesplatser.

För att väl underbygga gestaltningen har litteratur som behandlar Sigurd Lewerentz estetik och arbetsmetoder studerats. Platsbesök och analys på utvalda referensobjekt, signerade arkitekten, har genomförts. Här har jag både inspirerats och funnit de gestaltningsprinciper som ligger till grund för gestaltningen. Litteratur som berör den moderna begravningsplatsens utveckling har gett en djupare förståelse för platsen utformning och dess historiska bevarandevärden. Platsbesök, inventering och analys av Östra kyrkogården genomfördes tidigt då gestaltningen utgick från landskapets befintliga karaktär och värden. Samtal med sakkunniga har kompletterat och konkretiserat litteraturen, där nya värdefulla infallsvinklar har fördjupat arbetet.

Ett undersökande skissarbete och modellstudier har varit viktiga verktyg för att komma framåt i gestaltningsprocessen. Arbetet utmynnar i ett idéförslag för hur minneslunden och dess närmaste omgivning kan utvecklas genom att skapa platser för människor att minnas sina döda, enskilt och tillsammans, oavsett religionstillhörighet. Idéförslaget innefattar en ceremoniplats och en minnesplats samt ökar funktionaliteten av den befintliga minneslunden. Idéförslaget länkar även samman den befintliga begravningsplatsen med den muslimska via ett angränsande naturområde. Detta ger även möjligheter för rekreation och framtida gravskick.

The Eastern Cemetery in Malmö was inaugurated in 1921 and it was designed by the architect Sigurd Lewerentz and is one of the foremost examples of burial and landscape architecture in Europe during the 20th century. Today there is a need to develop its memorial grove and the immediate surroundings. There is also a demand to add more places for mourning, contemplation, and recreation in a denominationally neutral context. This work intends to give a design proposal for this part of the eastern cemetery and to link with the surrounding landscape. The design proposal intends to strengthen the existing landscape and to make it more available for people with different needs and wishes.

To elaborate a well substantiated design proposal literature concerning Sigurd Lewerentz's aesthetics and working methods has been studied. Site visits and analysis of selected reference objects and architecture, signed by the architect, has been executed. These visits were both inspiring and helpful in order to find the design principles that underlies the design proposal. Literature concerning the development of the modern burial site has provided a deeper understanding of the site's design and its historical preservation values.

Site visits, inventory and analysis at the eastern cemetery were executed early in the sketch and process, since the design proposal was based on the existing character and values of the landscape and the existing architecture. As a supplement to literature as well as concretizes it, interviews with experts such as architecture historian and architects yield new valuable perspectives that have deepened the final result. Sketching and model studies was the most important tools and methods in order to develop the design and the final proposal.

The result ended in an idea proposal for how the memorial grove and its immediate surroundings can be developed by creating places for people to remember the dead, individually and together, regardless of religious affiliation. The proposal includes a ceremony site and a memorial site and increases the functionality of the existing memorial grove. The design proposal also intends to links the existing burial ground with the Muslim one via an adjacent green area, which also provides opportunities for recreation and future burial conditions.
