Abstract

Det övergripande syftet med arbetet var att undersöka skadepanoramat hos polishundar samt
intervjua hundförare om riskfaktorer för skada. Detta för att i framtiden kunna förbättra hälsan hos
svenska polishundar. Undersökningen utgjordes av en journalstudie, en enkätstudie och en
litteraturinsamling. I journalstudien granskades vilka skador som hundarna hade på rörelseapparaten
vid besök på Universitetsdjursjukhuset i Uppsala (UDS). I enkätstudien granskades vilka
riskfaktorer som hundförare i Sverige associerar till skador på sina hundar. Slutligen utfördes en
litteraturinsamling gällande skador hos tjänstehundarna samt riskfaktorer för dessa skador.
Arbetet är av intresse då ökad kunskap om skadeprevention är en viktig del av arbetet för en
djursjukskötare, liksom för andra professioner inom djurhälsovården.
Journalstudien utfördes genom att författarna fick tillgång till universitetsdjursjukhusets (UDS)
journalsystem. Författarna gick igenom totalt 132 journaler som gällde Polismyndighetens djur
varav 39 journaler matchade valda inklusionskriterier. Dessa kriterier var att hundarna skulle ha
haft problem kopplat till rörelseapparaten och att vård skulle ha sökts på UDS mellan år 2000 och
2022. Författarna hade fått godkänt av Polismyndigheten region mitt Uppsala att granska journaler
gällande deras hundar.
Förutom journalstudien utfördes en enkätstudie riktad till hundförare inom Polismyndigheten i
Sverige. Frågorna i enkäten gällde vilka skador som hundförare sett hos sina tjänstehundar samt
hundförarnas uppfattning om riskmoment som kan leda till skador på rörelseapparaten, i samband
med tjänst och träning av hund. Parallellt med journalstudien och enkätstudien utfördes även en
litteraturinsamling där författarna studerade den vetenskapliga litteraturen på området.
I journalstudien framgick det att de vanligast förekommande skadorna på rörelseapparaten var på
leder och muskulatur. De raser som förekom i studien var i fallande ordning tysk schäferhund,
belgisk vallhund/malinois, labrador retriever, engelsk springerspaniel, blandras, australiensk
cattledog och rottweiler. Hundförarna angav i enkätstudien att de sett skador på samtliga listade
områden på rörelseapparaten: skelett, muskler, leder, ligament och senor. Hundförare uppfattade
bland annat följande moment i träning eller tjänst som riskfyllda: skyddsarbete, räddningssök,
explosiv fysisk ansträngning när hunden är ouppvärmd, samt in och uthopp ur bil. Det behövs mer
forskning för att kunna ge evidensbaserade råd gällande skadeprevention av polisens tjänstehundar.

The overall purpose of the work was to investigate the injury panorama in police dogs and to
interview dog handlers about risk factors for injury. This is to be able to improve the health of
Swedish police dogs in the future. The survey consisted of a medical record study, a questionnaire
study and a literature collection. The medical record study examined the injuries that the dogs had
to the musculoskeletal system during a visit to the University Animal Hospital in Uppsala (UDS).
The questionnaire study examined the risk factors that dog handlers in Sweden associate with
injuries to their dogs. Finally, a literature collection was performed regarding injuries in service dogs
and risk factors for these injuries.
The work is of interest as increased knowledge about injury prevention is an important part of the
work for a veterinary nurse, as well as for other professionals in animal health care.
The journal study was performed by giving the authors access to the University Animal Hospital's
(UDS) journal system. The authors reviewed a total of 132 records relating to the Police Authority's
animals, of which 39 records match selected inclusion criteria. These criteria were that the dogs
would have had problems connected to the musculoskeletal system and that care would have been
sought at UDS between the years 2000 and 2022. The authors had been approved by the Police
Authority region central Uppsala to review records regarding their dogs.
In addition to the medical record study, a questionnaire study was conducted aimed at dog
handlers within the Police Authority in Sweden. The questions in the questionnaire concerned the
injuries that dog handlers have seen in their service dogs and the dog handlers' perception of risk
factors that can lead to damage to the musculoskeletal system in connection with service and training
of dogs. In parallel with the medical record study and the questionnaire study, a literature collection
was also carried out where the authors studied the scientific literature in the field.
The medical record study showed that the most common injuries to the musculoskeletal system were
joints and muscles. The breeds that appeared in the study were in descending order German
Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd / Malinois, Labrador Retriever, English Springer Spaniel, Mixed
Breed, Australian Cattledog and Rottweiler. The dog handlers stated in the questionnaire study that
they had seen damage to all listed areas on the musculoskeletal system: skeleton, muscles, joints,
ligaments and tendons. Dog handlers perceived, among other things, the following elements in
training or service as risky: protection work, search for rescue, explosive physical exertion when the
dog was not warmed-up, and getting in and out of a car. More research is needed to be able to
provide evidence-based advice regarding injury prevention of police service dogs.
