Abstract

Allt fler införskaffar hund och många väljer att börja med en valp för att få vara med från början i
hundens liv. Med valpar kommer även många beslut, och ett av dem är hur valpen ska utfodras. Det
finns en uppsjö av olika typer av foder i fackhandelsbutiker och det kan vara svårt att veta vilket
foder som faktiskt täcker valpens behov och vad som är mest optimalt för dem.
Syftet med arbetet var att genom en litteraturgenomgång ta reda på hur en valp bör utfodras för
optimala förhållanden vad gäller hälsa och tillväxt, samt finna de vanligaste riskerna kopplade till
bristande utfodring. Studien som utfördes baserades på valpars energibehov och behovet av
näringsämnena protein, fett, kolhydrater, vitaminer och mineraler under tillväxtstadiet. Arbetet
omfattade även en jämförelse av energi- och näringsinnehåll i tre olika typer av foder för valpar,
samt en utvärdering av dessa.
Litteraturgenomgången visade att framför allt protein, fett, kolhydrater, vitamin A och D samt
mineralerna kalcium och fosfor behövdes i rätt mängder vid utfodring för att valpar ska växa på ett
hälsosamt sätt. Om obalans uppstod genom antingen över- eller underskott av näringsämnen var de
vanligaste riskerna övervikt och förändrad tillväxttakt som i sin tur kunde leda till ortopediska
sjukdomar.
I jämförelsen av de tre helfodrens energiinnehåll visade det sig att MUSH hade betydligt högre
energi per kg torrsubstans än de andra två fodren. Även näringsinnehållet jämfördes per kg
torrsubstans och där sågs att proteinhalten och fetthalten i alla tre foder var högre än
minimirekommendationerna ifrån litteraturen, där MUSH stack ut mest. Vitamin A och D låg inom
referensvärde i torrfodren från Royal Canin och Brit Care, medan MUSHej tillförde vitaminer i sina
foder och hade därför inga värden. I Royal Canin och Brit Care låg kalcium- och fosforhalten inom
referensvärdena, i MUSH var fosforhalten inom referens men kalciumhalten var över referens.
Fokus låg på energi- och näringsinnehåll då litteraturgenomgången visade att dessa faktorer var av
störst värde för en hälsosam tillväxt.När de tre fodertyperna jämfördes gjordes det utifrån tillgänglig
data kring fodren och ställdes mot det som hittats i litteraturen om utfodring av valpar, och då ansågs
Royal Canin Medium Puppy stämma bäst överens med rekommendationerna.
Generellt krävs fler studier kring utfodring av valpar och vad som är optimalt under
tillväxtstadiet, men även kring vilka risker som finns associerade med alternativa fodertyper och
foder baserat på humandieter. Den mesta litteraturen som granskats inför litteraturstudien var även
av utländsk härkomst, fler studier inom Sverige vore önskvärt för att på bästa sätt kunna applicera
det på svenska valpar och fodren som säljs på svenska marknaden.

More and more people make the desicion to get a dog and many choose to start with a puppy to
be able to be involved from the beginning of the dog's life. With puppies, there are many decisions
to make, and one of them is how to feed the puppy. There is a plethora of different types of food in
specialty stores and it can be difficult to know which food covers the puppy's nutritional needs and
what would be the most optimalfor them.
The purpose of thisthesis was to find out the optimal way to feed a puppy in terms of health and
growth, and to find the most common risks associated with inadequate feeding. The performed study
was based on puppies' energy needs and the need for the nutrients protein, fat, carbohydrates,
vitamins and minerals during the growth stage. Energy and nutrient content of three different types
of complete feed for puppies were also compared and evaluated.
The results fromthe literature review showedthat especially protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins
A and D as well as the minerals calcium and phosphorus were essential in the right amounts when
feeding puppies to achieve a healthy growth. The most common risks associated with nutritional
imbalances were obesity and altered growth rate which could then result in orthopedic diseases.
The comparison ofthe energy content in threefeeds, showedthat MUSHhad significantly higher
energy per kg dry matter than the other two feeds. Also the nutrient content was compared per kg of
dry matter and it was seen that the protein and fat content in all three feeds was higher than the
minimum recommendations in the literature, where MUSH stood out as the most deviant. Vitamins
A and D were within the reference value in the dry feed from Royal Canin and Brit Care, while
MUSH did not add vitamins to its feed and therefore had no values declared.In Royal Canin and
Brit Care the calcium and phosphorus content was within the reference values, in MUSH the
phosphorus content was within reference but the calcium content was above reference. The focus of
this thesis was energy and nutrient content since they were the most important parts when feeding
puppies.
When the three types of feed were compared, it was done based on available data on the feed
and compared to what was found in the literature about feeding puppies, and then Royal Canin
Medium Puppy was considered the most consistent with the recommendations.
In general, more studies are required on feeding puppies and what is optimal feeding during the
growth stage, but also on the risks associated with alternative types of feed and feed based on human
diets. A major part of the literature included in this thesis was of foreign origin, and it would be
desirable with more Swedish studies to be able to best apply it to Swedish dogs and the feeds sold
on the Swedish market.
