Abstract

Medelåldern av lantbrukarna i Sverige är hög, 2017 var den 58 år, och antalet mjölkföretag
har minskat kontinuerligt de senaste decennierna. Däremot har storleken på de kvarvarande
företagen ökat samt djurens produktion. I flera andra sektorer väljer företag att ta nytta av
stordriftsfördelar för att minska företagets kostnader i produktionsledet eller erbjuda tjänster
till ett konkurrenskraftigt pris. För lantbrukare kan expansion vara en komplicerad process
eftersom det leder till mycket administrativ tid för ansökningar om tillstånd hos kommun och
länsstyrelse. Det är en stor investering att expandera sin verksamhet samt prishöjningar på
råvaror och insatsvaror under senare delen av 2021 har inte gjort det enklare.
Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka vad som ligger till grund för att en lantbrukare väljer att
expandera sin befintliga produktion samt om den kan dra nytta av stordriftsfördelar i
samband med sin utveckling. Samtliga lantbrukare bedriver mjölkproduktion och vi har
koncentrerat oss på tre uppbundna besättningar, två om 50 mjölkande kor och en tredje med
knappt 15. Dessa tre planerar att bygga eller har byggt ett robotstall för ungefär 115–120
mjölkande kor. Två av respondenterna är belägna i Uppsala län och den tredje i Gävleborgs
län.
Uppsatsens teoretiska syntes behandlar beslutsteori, investeringsteori och stordriftsfördelar.
Studien baseras på en kvalitativ forskningsmetod med semistrukturerade intervjuer och en
induktiv ansats, vi samlar även in ytterligare empiriskt material genom litteraturgenomgång. I
analys och diskussionsdelen kopplas de valda teorierna till empiriska materialet från
intervjuerna. Vid analysen av det empiriska materialet avkodas intervjuerna för att kunna
samla in nyckelord, vilket i det här fallet kommer vara svar på vår frågeställning som sedan
presenteras i slutsatsen.
Slutsatsen visar att det är många mjuka värden som ligger till grund för att expandera och
driva ett mjölkföretag. Djurvälfärd är viktigt samtidigt som att kunna frigöra tid och ägna den
åt familj och vänner. Lantbrukarna sätter också stort värde i att förvalta släktgården och driva
en lönsam mjölkproduktion. Om dessa kriterier är uppfyllda ser lantbrukaren nytta och glädje
att driva mjölkföretaget vidare. Ren produktinriktning och endast fokus på avkastning på
kapital är aldrig något primärt fokus.

In 2017, the average age of farmers in Sweden was 58 years and the number of dairyfarms
has decreased continuously in recent decades. The size of the remaining companies has
increased as the milk production. In other sectors companies take advantage of economies of
scale to reduce the costs of their products or services to achieve a competitive price. For
farmers, expansion can be a complicated process as it involves a lot of administrative time for
applications to the county administrative board. It is a major investment to expand their
current operation and the price increases on raw materials and inputs during the second part
of 2021 complicate the process.
The purpose of this study is to investigate why farmers choose to expand their existing
production and whether it can benefit from economies of scale in relation to development. All
farmers are dedicated to dairy farming, and we have concentrated on three tied-up herds, two
of the farmers have 50 milking and a third has under 15. These three are planning to build or
have built a robot stable for approximately 115-120 milking cows. Two of the respondents
are located in Uppsala County and the third in Gävleborg County.
The theoretical synthesis of the thesis deals with decision theory, investment theory and
economies of scale. The study is based on a qualitative research method with semi-structured
interviews and an inductive approach, we also collect additional empirical material through a
literature review.
In the analysis and discussion section, the selected theories are linked to the empirical
material from the interviews. In the analysis of the empirical material, the interviews are
decoded in order to be able to collect keywords, which in this case will be the answer to why
farmers want to expand their operation and if they can use some benefits from economies of
scale. This will further be presented in the conclusion.
The conclusion shows that soft values are very important for the farmer when expanding and
running a dairy farm. Animal welfare is important and also being able to set up sparetime to
dedicate it to family and friends. Farmers also see great value in managing the family farm
and running a profitable dairy production. If these criteria are met, the farmer sees the benefit

and joy of running the farm further. Pure focus on maximal production and return on capital
is never a primary focus
