Abstract

This study aimed to describe herding dogs and humans working together within the Swedish livestock husbandry. Five people and their herding dogs participated in the study through interviews and observations. The empirical evidence collected is discussed together with the concepts of non-human actors, relations and values. The notion of these concepts derives from Latour’s actor-network theory and Owain and Jones’ work with the concept of dwelling. Working with herding dogs is a long-term commitment that requires a lot of effort and time from humans and dogs alike. This paper describes the day to day life of the working dog-human dyads, the importance of the herding dog’s presence for those working alongside them. It also describes the relational work that starts long before the dogs can begin working with livestock and how it continues throughout their lives. To work with dogs is to work with living beings with their own needs and wants, which requires good insight in questions of animal ethics and animal welfare. The empirical evidence showed that incorporating the innate capabilities of herding dogs with the tasks of livestock husbandry through dynamic relationships can result in work that is rewarding for both dogs and humans.
