Abstract

Att arbeta hållbart inom SME ses oftast som ett problem på grund av begränsade resurser. SME är i behov av en tydligare vägledning kring hur de kan arbeta med sina resurser på ett effektivt sätt. Tidigare forskning har fokuserat på antingen styrverktyg eller utvecklingen av hållbarhetsarbete. Det saknas forskning kring hur SME kan kombinera hållbarhetsperspektiv och styrverktyg för att nå hållbarhet på sikt.

Studien utgår från den resursbaserade teorin som bygger på att identifiera nyckelresurser, både materiella och immateriella, som är relevanta för en väsentlighetsanalys. De utvalda nyckelresurserna kan sedan användas för att identifiera lämpliga styrverktyg för SME.

Genom att föreslå hållbara och bransch-relevanta styrverktyg kommer implementeringen och utförandet av hållbarhetsarbetet att underlättas. För att lyckas implementera hållbarhet på lång sikt föreslås det i studien att alla tre hållbarhetsperspektiv (sociala, ekonomiska och miljömässiga) behöver genomsyra alla verksamhetens processer. Hållbara styrverktyg inom dessa områden har således analyserats. Det är väl känt att SME, till skillnad från stora företag, har större andel informella styrverktyg. De informella styrverktygen anses behöva kompletteras med formella. Formella styrverktyg ger en tydligare struktur inom verksamheten och medför att hållbarhetsmål kan jämföras över tid. Sammanfattningsvis bidrar studien med en konceptuell analys och en empirisk illustration av hur SME kan utifrån sina förutsättningar, hitta både relevanta och lämpliga styrverktyg som blir högst aktuella för deras hållbarhetsarbete inom branschen.

Implementing sustainability considerations in a small and medium enterprise (SME) is often seen as problematic due to limited resources. SMEs need clearer guidance on how to work with their resources effectively. Previous research has focused on either control tools or the development of sustainability work. There is a lack of research on how SMEs can combine sustainability perspectives and control tools to achieve sustainability in the long term.

The study builds on the resource-based theory by identifying key resources, both intangible and tangible, that are relevant for a materiality assessment of sustainability issues for an SME. The selected key resources can then be used to identify suitable control tools for SMEs.

Proposing sustainable and industry-relevant control tools is important to facilitate the implementation and execution of transition to more sustainable practices. In order to succeed with implementing sustainability in the long term, the study proposes that all three sustainability perspectives (social, economic and environmental) need to permeate all the firm processes. Sustainability controls across all three perspectives are thus analyzed. In terms of the type of controls, it is well known that SMEs, unlike large companies, rely more on informal control tools arising during socialization. Such controls are therefore considered alongside more formal controls that provide a clearer structure within the business and enable tracking accomplishment of sustainability goals over time. Overall, the study contributes with a conceptual analysis and an empirical illustration of how SMEs can, based on their resources, find control tools that are relevant and suitable for their sustainability work in a given industry.
