Abstract

One of the effects of climate change is the increasing temperatures, which is estimated to increase even further in the future. This increase in ambient temperature also constitutes a risk to the agri-food sector because even more extreme heat waves are expected, which can result in more heat stress. The agri-food sector is one of many sectors that is affected by heat stress, and it is of great importance that the agricultural food sector is steadily functioning and high producing, because without reliable food production the welfare of society threatened. The dairy cow is important for food production, for keeping the landscapes open and for the preservation of biodiversity, and of importance as cultural heritage. Unfortunately, heat stress poses a threat to cow’s fertility, health, and productivity. Therefore, it is due time to further research how heat stress impacts the dairy sector. The impact of heat stress during the lactation period is better researched and understood, than its effects during late gestation. The late gestational period is an important time for fetal growth and for preparation for the upcoming lactation, so it is of interest to examine how heat stress during this period impacts the cow. The results from this literature review indicate that heat stress during late gestation affects the three parameters production, fertility, and health negatively, as lower pregnancy rates, lower milk yields and higher prevalence of diseases have been observed after calving.
