Abstract

Developing a farm business in the form of buying or leasing more land requires a lot of capital. One way to increase the value of the farming is to grow crops with high turnover such as specialty crops. Demand for vegetables on the market is rising and the opportunity to turn over a lot of money per hectare is great in comparison with traditional grain production. In addition, the market share is low for specialty crops, such as vegetables, which indicates that there is room for more growers. Given the demand that seems to exist for specialty crops and the opportunity to be able to turn over a higher amount of money per hectare, the cultivation of specialty crops creates greater opportunities and paths towards profitable production. Why then do some farmers choose to ignore this possibility? And why do other farmers choose to take advantage of the opportunity?
In this qualitative interview study, a total of eight farmers were interviewed. Four who have started growing specialty crops and four who have not yet started. To help investigate farmers' underlying factors, Theory of planned behavior is used to explain and predict behaviors based on identifying an individual's underlying psychological factors such as attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control.
The results show that farmers who have not started to grow special crops see more obstacles than opportunities. Among other things, that it is high risk, a lot of capital required for start-up, stress, and a lot of handwork. Farmers who started growing special crops were quick to make decisions, had a desire to maximize the utilization of existing assets and felt only a small amount of anxiety and risk before starting up.
This may be due to different personality traits or that farmers want to run their businesses in different ways. Either themselves, with employees, with a lot of work periodically or as a regular 7-16 job. Something that is consistent with all eight farmers is the importance of having a role model or serious business partner.
