Abstract

Detta arbete undersöker vilken roll estetik spelar i landskapsarkitekturtävlingen Falköpings stadskärna arrangerad av Falköpings kommun 2021. Med bakgrund i en olikhet mellan estetikens roll inom landskapsarkitekturens forskning och profession diskuteras estetikens roll inom professionen genom att undersöka vilka värden och värderingar som förekommer i juryutlåtandet till tävlingen samt hur juryn använder estetiska värden och värderingar i bedömningen.

Värden och värderingar delades in i tre kategorier, estetiska, sociala och miljömässiga och presenteras i en tabell, för att kunna jämföra förekomsten av dem. De estetiska fördjupades med utförligare beskrivningar utifrån Zangwills indelning i estetiska och icke-estetiska egenskaper samt Meyers teori om skönhetens påverkan på hållbarhet inom landskapsarkitektur.

Resultatet visar att estetiska värden och värderingar förekom i både kriterierna för tävlingen och i bedömningen av tävlingsförslagen, att de estetiska värdena och värderingarna förekom under bedömningen av alla kriterier samt att estetiska värden och värderingar förekom i samma utsträckning för alla förslagen oavsett om det var det vinnande eller ej. Diskussionen rör bland annat estetikens centrala roll i tävlingen och den bakomliggande värderingen om nutida utformning.

Förutsatt att arkitekturtävlingar har en central roll för professionen, samt att tävlingen Falköpings stadskärna är en paradigmatisk tävling, tyder resultaten på en central roll för estetik i professionen. Med bakgrund i detta lyfts frågan: om estetik inte också borde få en mer central roll inom landskapsforskning.

This bachelor thesis examines the role of aesthetics in the landscape architecture competition of Falköpings stadskärna, arranged by Falköping municipality in 2021. Based on the difference between the role of aesthetics in the research and profession of landscape architecture the role of aesthetics in the profession is discussed by studying what values the jury addresses as well as how they use aesthetic values in their summary of the competition process.

The values are ordered in three categories, aesthetic, social and environmental and presented in a table, in order to be able to compare how the values are featured. The aesthetic values were defined and described using Zangwill’s aesthetic and non-aesthetic properties and Meyer’s theory about the effect of beauty on sustainability in landscape architecture.

The results show that aesthetic values are featured in both the criteria of the competition and the evaluation of the competition entries, that aesthetic values are featured in the evaluation of all the criteria as well as that the aesthetics values are featured in the entries to the same extent regardless of whether it was the winning entry or not. The discussion mentions among other topics the central role of aesthetics in the competition as well as the underlying value of a modern design.

This indicates a central role for aesthetics in landscape architecture, to the extent that architecture competitions have a central role in the profession and that the competition Falköpings stadskärna is a paradigmatic case. Based on this reasoning a question of whether aesthetics should not also have a more central role in landscape research.
