Abstract

Den offentliga ytan är under förändring. I takt med att sociala aktiviteter allt mer sker i privatiserade
eller digitala miljöer minskar användningen av den offentliga ytan. Offentliga miljöer är betydande
mötesplatser i staden och är viktiga för ett hälsosamt samhälle. Detta arbete behandlar offentliga
miljöer i staden samt hur de förhåller sig till teorier om fysisk utformning och social hållbarhet.
Ambitionen är att bidra till ökad förståelse för den offentliga miljön, och därigenom belysa vikten
av socialt hållbar planering av offentlig miljö. Genom litteraturstudie, observationer och analyser
har resultatet tagits fram. Nobeltorget i Malmö valdes som exempelplats för att undersöka
litteraturstudiens presenterade teorier i praktiken. Utifrån resultatet samt litteraturstudien förs sedan
en diskussion kring hur teorierna förhåller sig till Nobeltorget och varandra.

Public space is undergoing change. As social activities increasingly take place in privatized or digital
environments, the use of public space decreases. Public places are significant meeting spots in the
city and are important for a healthy society. This paper deals with public space in the city and how
it relates to theories of physical design and social sustainability. The ambition is to contribute to an
increased understanding of the public space, and thereby highlight the importance of socially
sustainable planning of the public environment. The results have been produced through literature
study, observation and analyses. Nobeltorget in Malmö was chosen as an example site to examine
the theories presented in the literature, in practice. Based on the results and the literature study, a
discussion is then held about how the theories relate to Nobeltorget and each other.
