Abstract

The need for energy in cows around calving vary, which can create problems with the energy balance
if not considered. A prolonged period of negative energy balance can result in a condition called
ketosis. Ketosis can be associated with for example reduced milk production and fertility problems.
Thus, ketosis can have a negative impact on the farmers economy.
This master thesis has been conducted in collaboration with Agricam with the aim of compiling
information about clinical- and subclinical ketosis in dairy cows and how it can be prevented during
the dry period in a literature review. The economic aspect of clinical- and subclinical ketosis was
also examined in the literature review. In addition to the literature study, a questionnaire regarding
sampling and attitude regarding ketosis was sent out to users of Agricams product, who already were
testing their heard for ketosis. To further increase knowledge regarding how Agricams users work
with ketosis, their ketosis-data collected from their herds were analysed. In conclusion, the literature
study showed that ketosis can be measured in different ways and that there is no universal threshold
established to diagnose clinical- or subclinical ketosis. However, it can still be stated that subclinical
ketosis seems to occur in most herds and to a greater extent than clinical ketosis. There are also
economic losses associated with both clinical- and subclinical ketosis. The conclusion of the survey
and ketosis data from the farms were that the work around ketosis and the prevalence differ among
farms.
