Abstract

klargöra strukturer i empirin.
staden.

This bachelor thesis explores how the street can be planned to generate social qualities within
modern day city planning. By adapting a qualitative approach consisting of literature studies and
case studies the research question will be answered. The case study explores the planning strategies
for two areas in Malmö, Amiralsgatan and Station Persborg (PP6051) and Norra Sorgenfri
(PP6020). The planning strategies will be analyzed with a qualitative content analysis with the
purpose of clarifying the discourse around the social qualities and the roll of the street within the
city of Malmö. The literature studies aim to summaries the existing level of knowledge regarding
the street as a place for social encounters and consists of categories that are considered to support
social behaviour on the street. The results from the two case studies will be compared to each other
and to the literature background to highlight structures in the empiric material. This will clarify how
the city of Malmö designs and plans the street with regards to social encounters and qualities.
The result presents planning approaches that can be related to the street as a social space within
modern day city planning. The planning approaches include an emphasis on the pedestrian, a need
for mixed uses, the design of the ground floor, the sense of safety and the importance of connectivity.
The essay highlights the importance of viewing the street from a broad perspective that includes the
street as a room for staying as well as a network that connects the city.
