Abstract

Människan har alltid anpassat landskap utefter sina egna och samhällets behov, och
därmed är förändringar en naturlig del av landskapets utveckling. Just nu genomgår
staden Kirunas landskap drastiska förändringar till följd av gruv- och mineralkoncernen
LKABs järnmalmsbrytning i Kirunagruvan. Stora delar av staden rivs för att ge plats åt
gruvans expansion, medan nya delar av staden byggs upp på andra platser. Detta är ett
omfattande omvandlingsprojekt - Kiruna stadsomvandling. De radikala förändringarna
påverkar stadens invånare, då deras hemmiljö inte längre är sig lik.
Studiens syfte har varit att få förståelse för hur relationen mellan människa och plats
påverkas vid omfattande förändringar av landskap. Därför har studien ämnat undersöka
medborgarnas perspektiv på den pågående stadsomvandlingen i Kiruna, samt hur
invånarnas synpunkter har tillvaratagits av styrande aktörer. För att ta reda på detta
har en kvalitativ fallstudie genomförts, vars centrala metod har varit intervjuer med tre
av stadsomvandlingens huvudsakliga aktörsgrupper; Kirunas invånare, Kiruna kommun
samt LKAB. Studiens resultat visar att Kirunas invånare accepterar stadsomvandlingen
och generellt sett är positivt inställda till den, samtidigt som de känner motstridiga
känslor; sorg för de omtyckta platser som rivs, samt både förväntan och skepsis inför
stadens nya delar som byggs. Styrande aktörer har tagit invånarnas perspektiv i
beaktning i planeringen av Kiruna stadsomvandling genom en utökad medborgardialog.
Därtill bevaras och flyttas ett antal utvalda byggnader och objekt av kulturhistoriskt
värde till nya stadsdelar, för att bevara stadens historia och identitet. Kirunaborna
ställer sig positiva till detta, men tvivlar samtidigt på om Kirunas identitet kommer
finnas kvar, och om nya Kiruna kommer kännas som hemma.

Humans have always altered landscapes according to their own and society’s needs,
and thus, changes are a natural part of the evolution of landscapes. Currently, the
landscape of the city of Kiruna is undergoing drastic changes due to the iron ore
extraction in the Kiruna underground mine, by the mining company LKAB. Large parts
of the city are being demolished to make way for the mine’s expansion, while new
districts are being developed in other parts of the city. This is a comprehensive
development project - Kiruna urban transformation. The radical changes affect the
city’s residents, as parts of their home environment turn unrecognizable.
The purpose of this study has been to gain an understanding of how the relation
between humans and place is affected by extensive landscape changes. Therefore, the
study aims to explore the citizens’ perspective on the ongoing urban transformation in
Kiruna, and how the views of the residents have been taken into account by governing
actors. To examine this, a qualitative case study has been conducted. The central
method has been interviews, including interviewing three of the urban transformation’s
main stakeholder groups; Kiruna’s residents, Kiruna municipality and LKAB. The results
of the study show that Kiruna’s residents accept the urban transformation and are
positive about it in general, while at the same time feeling conflicting emotions; sorrow
for the highly valued places that are being demolished and both expectation and
skepticism about the new parts of the city that are being built. By applying an extended
civil dialogue, governing actors have taken the residents’ perspectives into account
in the planning process of the urban transformation of Kiruna. In addition, selected
buildings and objects of cultural and historical value are preserved and moved to new
districts in order to preserve the city’s history and identity. Kiruna’s residents have
a positive attitude towards this, but are at the same time doubtful whether Kiruna’s
identity will remain, and whether the new city of Kiruna will feel like home.
