Abstract

När det nuförtiden talas om förtätning, talas det oftast om att öka bostadsbyggandet för att möta de växande bostadsbehoven.
Samtidigt erhåller förtätningen kritik för att allt oftare beskrivas som synonymt med hållbar stadsplanering. Rådande förtätningsideal
alstrar konsekvenser vad gäller barns tillgång och möjlighet till utomhusrekreation. Det här arbetet avser att undersöka om förtätning
är en olägenhet eller tillgång för städernas barn och deras utomhusrekreation.
Avsikten har varit att, ur ett planerarperspektiv, undersöka hur Ystads och Trelleborgs kommun planerar förtätningsområden i relation
till barns utomhusrekreation. I Ystad har vi utgått från det nyproducerade området Västra Sjöstaden som genomgår kontinuerlig
förtätning, medan vi i Trelleborg förhållit oss till Övre & Stadsparkskvarteren som är ett befintligt område som planeras genomgå
förtätning. För att få en övergripande resultatbild har en multipel fallstudie utgjort arbetets grund, med metoder som
dokumentanalys, platsbesök och e-postkonversationer. Som stöd har vi använt ett teoretiskt ramverk koncentrerat till dels ChildFriendly Environments (CFE) för att kunna synliggöra konceptet med barnvänliga städer (Horelli, 1998; Riggio, 2002; Kyttä, 2004),
dels Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) för att lyfta innebörden av kompakt förtätning som alstrar promenadvänliga städer baserade
kring noder för kollektivtrafik (Bengtsson & Qviström, 2015; Padeiro, Louro & Marques da Costa, 2019). Arbetet har därigenom haft
ett dynamiskt tillvägagångssätt som genererat ett slutresultat som tyder på att planerarna projekterar attraktiva stadsförtätningar utan
tillräcklig hänsyn till barn och deras möjligheter till utomhusrekreation i staden. I slutändan förblir detta en politiskt och kommunalt
förankrad prioriteringsfråga; om förtätningen anses vara viktigare än stadens friytor för rekreation och vise versa.

Nowadays, when it comes to densification, it is often associated with the increasing construction of housing in an attempt to meet the
needs of the growing city. At the same time, the densification receives criticism for the fact that it is increasingly referred to as
sustainable urban planning. The ideal regarding prevailing densification generates consequences for children's access and
opportunities for outdoor recreation, as children are one of the most vulnerable social groups. This thesis aims to examine whether
densification is an inconvenience or asset for urban children and their outdoor recreation.
The aim has been to investigate how Ystad’s and Trelleborg’s municipalities contemplate densification in relation to children's
outdoor recreation, from a planner’s perspective. In Ystad, we have focused on Västra Sjöstaden which is a newly produced area that is
still undergoing densification, while in Trelleborg we have focused on Övre & Stadsparkskvarteren which is an existing area that is
planned to undergo densification. In order to achieve a more comprehensive result, a multiple case study has shaped the foundation
of this thesis, with methods such as document analysis, site visits and email conversations. We have also used a theoretical
framework that concentrates partly on Child-Friendly Environments (CFE) in order to describe the concept of child-friendly cities
(Horelli, 1998; Riggio, 2002; Kyttä, 2004), and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) to highlight the meaning of densification that
creates walkable cities (Bengtsson & Qviström, 2015; Padeiro, Louro & Marques da Costa, 2019). Thereby, the thesis has had a
dynamic approach that has generated a final result that indicates that the planners are constructing attractive urban densification
without sufficient regard for children and their opportunities for outdoor recreation in the city. This is because in the end it remains a
political and municipal priority issue; if the densification is more important than the open spaces of the city and vice versa.
