Abstract

Landskap skapas genom processer, över tid. Landskapsarkitektur, i sin tur, handlar om hur platser
skapas för att ge plats för både sociala möten och
vegetationssystem och hur dessa interagerar och utvecklas tillsammans. Detta arbete syftar till att förstå hur sociala möten, vegetationsprocesser och omvärldsfaktorer påverkar och påverkas av landskapets process, samt hur vi som landskapsarkitekter ska illustrera våra projekt för att kunna kommunicera landskapets föränderliga uttryck.

Konceptet tid, vars betydelse spelar en stor roll i detta arbete, kan delas upp i två typer av uttryck; cyklisk tid och progressiv tid. Cykliska tidsuttryck är återkommande och har oftare en kortare tidshorisont, och innefattar bland annat förändringarna i ljus under dygnet och årstidernas förändringar i väder. Progressiva tidsuttryck är ofta mer långsiktiga och inte återkommande, utan istället enkelriktade förändringar; exempelvis, tillväxten hos ett träd eller naturens succession.

Tidens gång kan visualiseras på olika sätt; vad alla har gemensamt är förändringen av de omvärldsfaktorerna, där förändringen används som verktyg för att illustrera tiden. Omvärldsfaktorer påverkar i sin tur de sociala och biologiska aspekterna på platsen, och därigenom representeras tidens påverkan på dynamiska processer. På detta sätt, kan vi visualisera landskapet som platser som utvecklas över tid.

Arbetet har gjorts utifrån tre studier: en litteraturstudie, en intervjustudie och en skisstudie. Uppsatsen ämnar att kunna bidra till en teoretisk förståelse för tidens betydelse för landskapsarkitekter, samt vilka processer som påverkar landskapets uttryck. Yrkesverksamma landskapsarkitekter har intervjuats för att inkludera en mer verklighetsförankrad bild av arbetets innehåll. Uppsatsen resulterar i illustrationer över hur tid kan visualiseras som en del av visionsbilder.

Landscape architecture, in turn, is about the shaping
of places to facilitate social interactions as well as
vegetative systems, and how these are combined and developed in cohesion with each other. This master thesis aims to understand how social connections, biological aspects and the landscape's external factors affect and are affected by the process of the landscape itself, as well as how we, as landscape architects, should illustrate our projects to be able to communicate the changing expressions of the landscape.

The concept of time, which connotation plays an important role in this thesis, can be defined in two types of expressions; cyclic and progressiv time. Cyclic time expressions are recurring and often have quite a short time horizon, and include amongst others the changes of light in a day and the seasons’ changes in weather. Progressive time expressions are often measured long term, and are continuous in their expression. They include the growth of a tree and the natural succession.

The passage of time can be visualized in a variety of ways; but what they have in common is that the change of the landscape’s external factors, where their change are used to illustrate time. The changes in the external factors result in changes in the social and biological aspects of the place, and through this, time's impact on dynamic processes. By doing this, we can communicate the landscape as a place that changes over time.

The paper is based on three studies; a literature
review study, an interview study and a sketch study. The
essay intends to contribute to a theoretical understanding
of the significance time has to landscape architects, as
well as which processes affect the expressions of the
landscape. Landscape architecture professionals have
been interviewed to further the real world connections of
the themes of the paper. This thesis results in illustrations showing how time can be visualized as parts of project visions.
