Abstract

Landscape architects and urban planners need the right tools to shape the sustainable cities of the future. As noise from traffic roads is one of the biggest environmental disturbances in Sweden, this needs to be highlighted so the right methods can be applied. The thesis touches on several existing methods for noise reduction that a landscape architect can use to create good living environments.
The methods have been studied via a literature study and specified to provide examples of how these can be used in noise-exposed living environments in connection with traffic roads. The literature study shows that immission-limiting methods such as noise barriers, noise screens or buildings only have an impact on the surrounding environment, however they can be effective it they are applied and constructed correctly by landscape architects in urban planning. Emissionlimiting methods can be effective for more people as the noise reduction is limited directly at the source, for example at the vehicle or the road surface. These measures are more difficult for a landscape architect to influence but important to keep in mind during the planning process. The results of the literature study are summarized on how immission-limiting and emissionlimiting methods can be applied. The methods are used for a case study in the form of a principle sketch of a noise-exposed work area in Lomma municipality with hopes of reducing the traffic noise in the western parts of the municipality. According to a noise investigation it reaches 60–65 dBA in the worst areas, in other areas noise levels reaches between 55–60 dBA. As the municipality strives
to achieve the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's recommendations of 55 dBA (Leq24h) (at the residential facade), measures need to be taken to fulfil the acquirements.
The principle sketch shows how different noise reduction methods can be combined to create good noise levels and interesting elements in the surrounding landscape. The principle sketch contains new buildings (office buildings, parking garages and businesses) noise barrier, noise screen, soundwall, vegetation, green walls and green roofs. Something that is clear for effective noise reduction in an area where the noise level is already high is to place the measures close to the noise source or close to the exposed area. The measures must not leave gaps where the sound can break through, therefore the buildings, noise barrier and noise screen have been placed without gaps as much as possible.
