Abstract

antibiotikaresistenta bakterier i råfoder beskrivs.
innehållet i kommersiella foder.

While the global pet food industry continues to grow so does the interest for unconventional diets,
with dry kibble and wet food defined as conventional. One of these diets that continues to grow in
popularity is raw meat-based diets (RMBD). RMBD is a diet consisting of uncooked ingredients
where meat, bones and offal make up the base.
This study aimed to determine what risk and benefits are associated with RMBD and to identify
possible common factors among the dogs and cats being fed RMBD. The reason why the pet owner
started to feed RMBD was also looked in to. To be able to answer the research questions a literature
study was conducted to collect information about RMBD in scientific published articles. A webbased survey was distributed to dog and cat owners via four Facebook groups dedicated to RMBD.
The result from the literature study indicated that the benefits associated with RMBD generally
were of anecdotal character and scientific evidence was lacking. There were on the other hand
multiple studies that described the bacterial contamination and risk of infectious diseases for both
pets and humans while feeding RMBD. A potential presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in
RMBD was also described in the articles. Pet owners who choose to feed RMBD should hence take
actions to prevent bacterial contamination of the home and bacteria spreading from pets to humans.
The result of the survey indicated that the main reason among the respondents to why they had
chosen to feed RMBD was because they thought that it was the most natural pet food alternative.
Many of the respondents also said that they do not trust the content in commercial pet food or said
that they thought the content in commercial pet food was inadequate. A majority of dogs and cats in
the survey had been fed RMBD since they were younger than one year old but other common factors
were difficult to identify, mainly because of the absence of a population that was not fed RMBD to
compare the results to.
